On this date in WWE history: Edge wins the title from John Cena at New Year's Revolution
On January 8, 2006, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) held its New Year's Revolution pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York.
The headlining bout was an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship featuring reigning champion John Cena against Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Kane, Carlito, and Chris Masters.
Edge was also on the card, losing to Ric Flair via disqualification in the opening match of the night. But the "Rated-R Superstar" was also holding in his possession, the Money in the Bank (MITB) briefcase, which he won way back at Wrestlemania 21.
After Cena retained his belt by being the last man standing, Edge immediately cashed in his MITB opportunity and rattled off two spears to take advantage of an already worn-down champion.
Like Bret Hart before him, who was also a tag team champion, Intercontinental champion and King of the Ring, Edge moved to the head of the class by securing the most prestigious belt in pro wrestling.
See how it all went down, after the jump.
What was your reaction to Edge's first title win?

Edge
Dunno about this. It wasn’t till he cashed it in for a second time that Edge became a mainstay in the main event scene. Of all the MiTB case holders, he’s done the best. The problem is, after his cash-ins, it’s pretty much a given that the cash-in will be an opportunistic one without any build-up.
disagree
Edge was on the cusp of main events since 01, but injuries really took the wind out of his momentum sails time and time again. By the time he won the first MiTB match, it was already a forgone conclusion in the minds of most that he would be given the title shortly afterward, and repeatedly.
The opportunistic cash-in is tailor made for mid-card heel elevation and Edge was long overdue by the time he cashed-in (as oppose to rushed wins by Swagger, Miz, Punk)
The fact that he wasn’t a mainstay until his second “cash-in” has little to do with MiTB, and more to do with timing, as Edge was always destined to be a long term main-eventer.
Three things
1) I thought the whole Rated R Superstar gimmick was kinda dumb
2) I miss Lita :(
3) The ref clearly counted to three. I don’t know how they can just ignore that, but that’s the WWE.
So go forth, my brethren, and proceed to mark the f*ck out
Hey, look! It's that guy who got Christian's push!
I am not glad Edge got so badly injured, but I’m glad he’s not on my television anymore.
The Moment that Brought Me Back to Wrestling
Like many wrestling fans, I sorta drifted out of the scene after high school once I got into college, just too busy and all that…
I was home at the tail end of Christmas break my senior year of college and my brother had ordered this PPV so I sat down and watched it with him. All-in-all, it wasn’t anything earth-shattering, especially when the main event involved Carlito and Chris Masters.
When this went down, however, I totally marked out and went absolutely apeshit for Edge. The next night I ended up like three hours late for a road trip I was supposed to be leaving on because I had to watch RAW to see the follow-up, they had me pulled back in.
It was a genius concept—early on—and I loved the idea. It’s become drastically more watered down over time, but that first cash in was absolute money.
This should have been the night that the WWE should have waken up about Cena and where he was headed. He got booed against heels like Masters and Carlito and Edge who was very hated at the time was cheered like Hogan after he won. The crowd made it clear where they stood and how they felt about the entire Cena experience on that night it was as blatant as could be. Yet here we are in 2012 and the WWE is still playing the same tired hand with the guy and it’s only gotten worse, talk about being tonedeaf smh.
