On this date in WWE history: Vince McMahon shreds his quads at the Royal Rumble
On January 30, 2005, World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view event, which emanated from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, ended in controversy when the remaining two finalists, Batista and John Cena, went over the top rope and hit the floor at the same time.
Referees from the RAW brand named Batista the victor while Smackdown! officials insisted it was, in fact, Cena who should be declared the winner.
That led an irate WWE Chairman Vince McMahon to storm down to the ring to order the match restarted. What happened after that, is perhaps best summarized by Vinny Mac himself, in a subsequent media Q&A with the Wall Street Journal:
Seven weeks ago, I severed both of my quadriceps tendons doing a stunt in the ring. I wasn't warmed up, I didn't stretch and that unfortunately is major surgery.
His stunt? Walking to the ring and climbing inside it.
See for yourself, after the jump.
Short version:
Long version:
Remember Cagesiders, to stretch and properly warm up every time you get off the couch to take a piss or get yourself a beer.

I'm in bad shape
but that bad. Then again the steriods could’ve caught up to him

that's a nasty injury.
How tough is Vince to just no-sell the shit out of it? True pro.
But yeah, a quad tear is basically more incriminating than a positive drug test.
The connection between muscle and tendon rupture and steroid use is well-documented. Lat, bicep and quad tears are almost exclusive to bodybuilding/powerlifting. It’s not a common “every day” injury at all, especially the low-impact way that it happened. Speaking from personal experience, the only guys i’ve ever known to tear muscles, were competitive bodybuilders…and myself, during a cycle.
Taken from muscleandstrength.com:
The use of steroids can make a person feel stronger than they actually are, resulting in trying to lift heavier weights than their body is actually capable of, which can lead to muscle tears. The muscle can get stronger more rapidly than the strength of the tendons then a greater possibility of tendon rupture is likely to occur.
Wow. Ouch.
Pretty ironic that something people do to get tougher actually makes them more fragile. Hugs, not drugs!

He tore his right quad when he jumped into the ring and then he tore his left quad a few minutes later trying to walk un-assisted. So, yes, very incriminating.
Or explain that time when Nash botched walking?

Exactly
The human body is not meant to be so damn big. It crumbles under the stress. Then, after they get injured, they have to go back to steroids to help them recover. It’s a vicious cycle.

Cena & Batista were very lucky that their feet hit the floor at the same time when they fell out of the ring before the planned finish. Sure, if Batista hit first, Cena was getting a shot at the other title at WM anyway, but it would’ve thrown a monkey wrench into how they got to Batista turning on Evolution.
