Video: Chris Jericho returns to Raw and confuses (and angers) everyone
In case you missed it last night (Jan. 2, 2012), here's the video of Chris Jericho returning to WWE on Raw after a series of cryptic videos teasing the big reveal.
Much has already been written of this segment, both praising it for its innovation and panning it for its perceived lack of payoff to the big reveal. And I can certainly see both sides, though I've made clear that I felt the entire thing was brilliant.
The above video is condensed, as the actual scene played out over more than just six minutes, which definitely takes away from what Jericho was doing. The basis for the segment was that Jericho returned, everyone cheered and loved it, and Jericho joined in and cheered just as hard. But when the fans were ready to stop marking out and hear what Jericho had to say, he just kept cheering and acting crazy, milking the crowd for all its love when the well had long since run dry.
It went from a happy, fun atmosphere to one of discomfort to one of comedy to one of anger, all in about three minutes worth of time. When it was over, Jericho was walking out to a growing chorus of boos.
Watching it again, I'm even more entertained by Jericho running around screaming, "OH, YEAH!" I'm also very much looking forward to seeing where exactly this goes and what he does next. What about you?

I’m so disappointed I fell asleep last night and couldn’t watch this live! So freaking awesome! So awesome! Jericho really is one the last true wrestlers who actually cares about working the marks! Can’t wait to see his next move!
So brilliant! Can’t remember the last time a wrestler worked the crowd towards his own ends so masterfully! Jericho is so underrated!

The more I think about this Geno...
I can’t help but wonder how much better this would have been if it ended the show. I think going from this to that six-man tag was a bad transition. Having the copyright logo appear at the bottom of the screen would have done the job much better. It would have allowed people to directly wonder what wil happen next week. It would also give more wait time for people to think.
I think the execution of this was extremely poor. Not in what Jericho did, but in the marketing, the anticlimax, and the transitioning. Timing is everything.
Agreed

Yeah, this would have been a great way to end the show
and also might have left some heat for the 6 man tag match and the Kane-Cena-Ryder aftermath.
WWE probably would have liked Jericho to end the show..
But then they couldn’t have shot fire from the ring in the Kane/Cena/Ryder segment.
We agree on that one.
This would have been an awesome way to close the show. No one would have known what the fuck just happened and we all would have been talking about it and wondering for next week.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

The Jericho angle is a good way to weed out those fans that are smart and those that have no fucking clue.

I haven't watched much in some years
but, I have no fucking clue.
They knew hed come back as a face, so this was his weird way of going back heel immediately? If so could have been done many other (better) ways.
He looks to be in the best shape as I can remember.

I don’t know what you said, but I don’t like you.

I think I'd be annoyed if I stayed up to watch this
Considering the time zone difference. 10 years ago I probably would have.
While to some it might seem ‘brilliant’, you don’t ever want an audience to switch off or give up on a program. Nothing’s worse for business than a disinterested consumer.

The beauty of the angle
is that everyone was just waiting for him to say something and up until the final minute or two, you thought he was just basking in the moment sort of like what the Rock did when he first came back before last year’s Wrestlemania.
