On this date in WWE history: 62 minutes and 12 seconds later, Rey Mysterio wins the Royal Rumble
Rey Mysterio is the shortest pro wrestler to ever win World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) Royal Rumble. He's also the only masked superstar to accomplish the feat.
But those aren't the records he's most remembered for.
On this date in WWE history (Jan. 29), Mysterio entered the 2006 Royal Rumble at number two and managed to outlast 28 other opponents to win the tournament and secure a spot in the subsequent WrestleMania main event.
He last eliminated Triple H and Randy Orton to seal the deal with a record-breaking time of 62 minutes and 12 seconds, beating out the previous mark set by Chris Benoit at the 2004 Rumble.
See it all unfold, after the jump.
Aside from tossing Trips and Orton, Mysterio also dumped Super Crazy, Rob Van Dam, Simon Dean and Psicosis. How about it Cagesiders, where do you rank his 2006 win among the all-time great performances at the annual Royal Rumble event?

I'm not gonna lie, Mysterio's Rumble win was one of the worst things WWE ever did.
It’s fine to give the Rumble win to a talent like Rey, but they only ever gave him the win as part of their seemingly unending scheme to exploit the death of Eddie Guerrero.
That was bad enough, but they further proceeded to handle Rey’s win and Wrestlemania spot like they never wanted him to be the winner, but felt obligated to have him win anyway out of some pathological need for Eddiesploitation. Rey’s match at Wrestlemania 22 was shorter than six other matches on the card, and was promoted as the fourth most important match on the card behind Cena/HHH, HBK/McMahon, and the Trish/Mickie match.
Then you have the actual card itself. Wrestlemania 22’s buildup had Mysterio not only lose clean to Orton at No Way Out, and not only did Rey not pin the champion to win the match, Kurt Angle held the belt at the time, but Angle actually made Orton tap out behind the referee’s back just to show how lowly on the totem pole Rey was compared to everybody else.
I could post for Christ knows how long about how disappointing, and in some cases downright infuriating Wrestlemania 22 was, but I don’t want to muddy up my point about Rey’s win.
Wait you mean you didn’t enjoy watching Booker T job to The Boogeyman at WM22??
The short length of the Mysterio match at WM22 was one of the big things that stood out to be watching that show live, especially considering the caliber of the participants in that match. Is this the only time in history that the Divas match lasted longer than a World Title bout?
Mysterio’s entire run was very awkward because it seemed pretty clear that it was only happening because of Eddie Guerrero’s death. Yet that awkwardness didn’t stop Chavo from wanting to be the guy who played that role instead of Rey.
I was also pretty annoyed that they did the marathon man at the Rumble again considering that Benoit had just did a similar thing a couple of years earlier. At this point with Rey it was like, come on now, come up with a fresh idea please.
Completely agreed
The buildup for Rey was either completely botched or never truly 100 percent backed by creative / management. The fact that Rey was actually booed in Chicago at Wrestlemania certainly didn’t help matters. What would have been a great underdog story turned into a lackluster title run.
If I recall correctly, however, Orton held the ropes and such on a leverage pin over Rey at No Way Out, so it definitely wasn’t a clean win.

Holding the ropes is clean enough for a heel.
Not to mention, even if you do consider it dirty, the audience of the shows have never been on page with that. Hence Bobby Roode losing every last bit of his heat after losing to Angle via a held rope at BFG.
first time I think I've completely agreed with you ***
This was the worst Rumble of the 00’s, tired, predictable, poorly booked, etc.
Speaking of greatest Rumble moments
Jesse, where’s the love for the ‘05 Rumble?? I thought it was an amazing match that really set the stage for a great ’road to wrestlemania’ for both brands.
Seriously, if you disagree, re-watch that rumble. There’s a storyline tie-in to every single segment and I thought it was fairly fast paced and definitely packed with stars. ’04 and ’05 were the two most underrated Rumbles in my opinion.
