On this date in WWF history: The gruesome 'I Quit' match between Mankind and The Rock

Photo

On January 24, 1999, the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) unleashed its annual Royal Rumble event from the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California. Vince McMahon would embrace his heel persona and put himself over as the winner, but that's not why this date in WWF history is worth noting.

Not even close.

That's because Mick Foley and The Rock would engage in the now-infamous "I Quit" match for the WWF title in the main event, which helped throw back the curtain on what took place that night thanks to Barry Blaustein's Beyond the Mat documentary.

Wrestling is fake? Watch the reaction from Foley's wife and kids during any one of his 11 unprotected chairshots.

The Rock would go on to win the bout (and the title) over an unconscious Mankind by playing a recording of his opponent's voice over the public address system, using the phrase "I Quit" from an earlier broadcast.

See the gruesome bout in its entirety, after the jump.

The footage from Beyond the Mat:

How about it Cagesiders, too far, even for the "Attitude" era? Or a necessary evil to put these guys over?

It's amazing how good this match was.

If it weren’t for Rocky and Mick Foley, the 1999 Royal Rumble would’ve probably gone down as the worst PPV in WWF history. This type of match should never happen again, but I applaud the abilities of Foley and Rocky to put on this match and rise above Russo’s shitty booking.

Rise Above Russo

new catch phrase for a wrestler in TNA, I have no idea who the main event guys are anymore since I stopped watching about a month ago.

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Curtis Martin, Willie Roaf, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer
"Clemson should've stopped turning the ball over" Dana Holgorsen when asked about running up the score in the Orange Bowl

I was at this event

it was brutal live, but it’s even worse on camera. Vince winning the rumble was ultra irritating.

1. Anderson Silva is waiting for you to punch him.
2. That guy is Anderson Silva.
3. Don't fucking punch that guy.

When I saw it on PPV I was shocked at the amount of chair shots mick took.

I was even more suprised that he kept asking Rocky to give him another one and then another one. I think the handcuffing and the unprotected shot made everyone just a bit squemish.

I've got something to say; it better to burn out than to fade away!!!
I'm still waiting for my CM Punk WWE Ice Cream Bar.

It would lead me to believe that @bisping must have pissed off @danawhite something fierce. RT @drjamezkelske: @danhendo just out of curiosity, if the #ufc comes to you and asks you to fight Bisping again how do you respond?" -Dan Henderson

The things Mick Foley did to entertain an audience

definitely cut years off of his life

One of the most damaging matches in wrestling history

U liked t at the time but it set a terrible precedent and lead to matches like Tanaka Vs Mahoney where there was like thirty unprotected chair shots to the head.

Even if she knew beforehand and was in on the act

how could you not have legit fear for your husband’s safety after watching those chair shots? When I saw it all those years ago, I thought nothing of it. Looking back, it was another excess of the Attitude Era that made it both so enjoyable and so damaging to the business of wrestling. it was a unique time back then, and thankfully we should never have to go back there again.

What if Foley's wife was in Kayfabe?

Seeing the kids cry was sad but she could have been in on it too. This is wrestling after all.

I doubt it

After reading his books, I would be really shocked if his wife was faking the tears and concern.

Foley had an interview recently

And they asked him about it. He said that their fear was 100% legit

So go forth, my brethren, and proceed to mark the f*ck out

I was like 14 and I remember thinking enough is enough. I was pretty bummed.

so good, though the chairs made me squirm

is the story that the rock cheated by playing the voice over or was foley knocked out?

Amazing how decent Cole/King were when they were face/heel, respectively. Suck the other way around.
