Rey Mysterio knee injury update: Hopes to be back by WrestleMania 28 (Video)

It's been a while since we've heard from Rey Mysterio but here he is giving an update on his knee injury and recovery timeline. Not surprisingly, he says he wants to return by WrestleMania 28, which takes place on April 1, 2012.

"As soon as I can put a little more support on my knee and joint and I can get through the first couple steps jogging on a treadmill, then I think that's going to be a good call. I'm hoping to try to make it back by WrestleMania."

I'm not sure if the plan is still in place but there were heavy rumors for some time that WWE wanted to break the record for the largest group of people wearing a mask in one place and WrestleMania this year in Miami is where they wanted to do it.

The original idea was to have Mysterio feud with Sin Cara, which makes sense considering both guys masks sell super well. But when they both got injured, it threw the entire thing into question. Kane came back wearing a mask, which may or may not have been Vince McMahon refusing to give up on the idea of breaking that record, but if Mysterio rushes himself back, and Sin Cara does the same (two likely scenarios, sadly), they could get what they wanted from the outset anyway.

Sound silly? That's because it is. But hey, they let Mysterio work for weeks with a bum knee and when he blew it out on Raw they just sent him off to get surgery number 678, so don't be surprised if they let him come back far sooner than he should.

I thought it was surgery number 619?

If he does come back, hopefully they do whatever they can to protect him. He seems like the nicest guy. I would hate if they destroy his knees so he can’t play with his kids and grandkids

So go forth, my brethren, and proceed to mark the f*ck out

Well lets journey back to 1997

Steve Austin suffered a debilitating neck injury. Doctors advised him to retire, yet he continued and WWF booked him. He went on to become the biggest star in wrestling history, surpassing Hogan in many area’s. Was it silly to continue wrestling? Did WWF force Austin to wrestle? No. The same goes for Rey Rey. WWE isn’t making him wrestle! They are going to take a guy at his word that he can go.

If this is a factor behind the Kane return/a rushed Mysterio return it’s a great example of the lunacy of the management. I mean, is breaking the record for the largest group of people wearing a mask in one place going to draw in viewers? Is there even ONE sad bastard who’ll be impressed enough to think, “Hm – this pro-wrestling thing’s for me”? It’s baffling.

Glen Jacobs has said he wanted to finish off the Kane character under the mask

Sorta like how Taker ditched the American Badass character when he started winding down. So perhaps that is the truth. Also, if Kane returned as a babyface I would totally agree with the mask for the record story. I can’t see for the life of me 60-70,000 people wearing the mask of the maniac Kane heel character he his playing right now. It would work easily with Rey or Cara and it could still work just by having Rey show up on the show and giving out 70,000 masks! You don’t need a masked wrestler in a match to pull off the record which is why the idea that they are pushing Rey to return to the ring makes no sense.

Give out 70,000 masks before the show, introduce him, Rey comes out and says “everybody put your masks on lets break this record” Masks go on and done. That would take 5 minutes.

Just retire Rey. You were a helluva worker but your schtick is old and I haven’t missed it one bit in your absence.
