On this date in WCW history: Sid Vicious snaps his leg in two
Since I cover combat sports for a living, I've pretty much desensitized myself to most of the unfortunate carnage that's part and parcel of a career in cage fighting. Blood, lacerations, you name it, I can handle it.
Well, almost.
My Achilles heel? Bones. I have trouble watching bones break, which is why I had to hide under my blankie when Frank Mir used Antonio Rodrigo's arm for his Thanksgiving wishbone.
That leads me to this date in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) history, when Sid Vicious competed for the World Heavyweight Championship against Scott Steiner, Jeff Jarrett and Animal in a "Four Corners" match at the Sin pay-per-view back on January 14, 2001.
During the bout, Sid took a leap of faith off the turnbuckle, trying to land a jumping big boot to the face of Steiner. He landed awkwardly on his lead leg, and pop-pop goes the weasel, the weasel.
See it after the jump (if you dare).
Not surprisingly, Sid required surgery and would walk with a cane for several months following his rehabilitation, which lasted over three years.
How about it Cagesiders, gnarliest injury to ever make the airwaves?

I saw it once.
Will never look at it again
Greatest lover ever during the day, Trainyard Sleeper at night.
All John Laurinatis’ fault. He booked the spot and refused to change it when Sid complained about doing a move off the ropes.
wow
I’m no historian so that was new info. thanks one of the reason I dig this site is the random knowledge that gets dropped. big Johnny kinda screwed the pooch there
He knows the guy with the bandage on his ass is going no were. Were you going fucking no were

Yea, Sid never did any turnbuckle moves, but Ace wanted him to put it in his arsenal like Taker did.

Its crazy..
to think about how this happened.. its only the 2nd rope.. its about 4 ft off the ground. Single sickest moment ever. I saw that happen live, I used to VCR all Nitro & Raw.. had a couple VCR’s going & all that. I had to stop & rewind & play back so many times. I still cannot believe what I saw then… sadly I can take this incident, but when it comes to twisted ankles, I squirm.. anytime watching basketball or football.. they show the slow mo of a twosted ankle I change the channel for at least 5 mins. I literally get sick, my face gets flush right away & feel light headed. Too many times I’ve done it in my life… Back on point… Sid’s been trying to make a come back, but Vince won’t hire him & he will not go to TnA. He’s said to be top notch shape.. really a modern miracle to see where he was.

Not as bad as it was the first time(s) I saw it
What I’ve always wondered is: How in the hell did that happen? He is a big guy, and he was older by that point, but he wasn’t very high on the ropes, hardly got much air…

not as bad?? really?!
thats the worst injury i’ve ever seen next to the corey hill leg break.
I don't know what the talk about Sid was
but to see a break that bad happen from such a small jump, I’d have to think that there had to be some drug issues in the past to at least play some role in that. Also, what likely didn’t help was that he was a 300+ pound guy landing on one leg and likely had no idea how to land a jump like that properly.
Sid wrestled in the 90’s. All wrestlers did steroids in the 90’s. Steroids make you susceptible to injury, especially muscle tears and bone fractures. Also, Sid was 40 at the time.
Even without all of that, someone of Sid’s stature and build should never ever jump from that height and land on one foot.
Sid didn't even want to do that move
He wasn’t exactly known for high-or-low-flying moves off the ropes.
It looked worse than Joe Theismann’s, and Theismann’s ended his career on the spot. Sad too, Sid had everything but the brains to dominate.
Gillberg...Gillberg...Gillberg...
Remember seeing it live, omg I couldn't believe it

Its all a work.. his leg wasn’t ever real, and Nash as a “joke” sawed through 3/4 of it.
Its all fun & games until someones eye gets put out.

Some things you cannot un-see.
That. I just curled up in a ball after watching that again.

What makes it more ridiculous
is that he actually finished the match. He laid in that same spot for a good 5 minutes, was intermittently kicked by Steiner and then pinned. The referee didn’t seem concerned at all.
Brutal.
