Will Ric Flair be in Miami for the Four Horsemen's WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony? (Updated)
WWE made a curious decision this year for one of its annual Hall of Fame (HOF) inductees, the ceremony of which will take place at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, on March 31, 2012. As announced on Monday Night Raw this past week, The Four Horsemen will be inducted.
It's important to note exactly what incarnation of the supergroup will be going in, as there were many different members scattered throughout its near decade long existence. The five members going in this year are Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham and J.J. Dillon.
The name that pops out on that list, because it should, is Ric Flair. That's because he was already inducted individually back in 2008 the night before WrestleMania 24, when he was "retired" by Shawn Michaels in one of the best matches in the history of the company, at least on an emotional level.
Now, four years later, Flair is headed back as a member of one of the greatest stables in pro wrestling history. This wouldn't be such a big deal if not for the fact that, you know, Flair currently works for WWE's chief competitor, TNA.
That obviously led to questions regarding how exactly they went about putting him in the HOF a second time and how TNA feels about it or if they were even told beforehand. The Wrestling Observer brings a few details:
Based on the chronology of events the way it was explained to us, HHH called Ric Flair on 1/9, before it aired. Flair was at the TNA tapings working. HHH told him they were inducting the Horsemen and it would be announced later in the night.
It doesn't appear the key people in TNA were aware of it until it aired on television. Flair and Vince McMahon do talk and I would suspect the subject was broached about a Four Horsemen in the Hall of Fame, because I've heard it discussed over the last year or two, ever since they made amends with J.J. Dillon. Arn Anderson was always someone considered. Arn Anderson was expected for last year in Atlanta, but I guess the idea was the Horsemen as a group, and at that point, with Flair far more prominent and still wrestling on TNA television, not to do so at that time.
...
WWE has not outright said Flair will be there, so at this point they haven't done anything wrong. They have the right to induct anyone they want into their Hall of Fame and the right to use any of the footage they own in marketing.
But they do want Flair there. And Flair wants to be there. Flair was going to go this year to sit in the crowd, even though TNA probably wasn't thrilled about it, if they were inducting people he knew like Edge and Arn Anderson, and he went last year when Shawn Michaels was inducted which WWE pushed hard on its web site. But it's a different thing from a contract issue to go and sit in a crowd at an event and another to be one of the featured performers.
So right now the situation is to see how TNA reacts to this, if they just let it go, or make it an issue with Flair, or an issue with WWE.
As noted by Meltzer in his Newsletter (subscription required but it's worth it), TNA is in an interesting situation here. On the one hand, it's a good thing that Flair is being inducted into the WWE HOF because in a sense, it shows that they have a top star worthy of induction twice. The flip side to that coin is that they look second rate, which they do anyway.
So should they let him go to the ceremony and be a part of the festivities?
Again, that's quite the conundrum because the WWE HOF is really nothing but a gimmick, a fairly cheap and easy way to make money off ticket and DVD sales. And without Ric Flair, inducting the Four Horsemen is essentially a waste of time, seeing as he's the only one who ever really had enough drawing power to stay over more than 20 years after the group was originally formed. Plus, his going back will provide a great bit of nostalgia for fans who want to see him back with the better promotion, anyway.
At the end of the day, TNA will look terrible if they don't let him go and they'll look terrible if they do. To that end, this was a brilliant move by WWE. The only welcome side effect to this is that Flair will likely still be under contract to TNA when the ceremony rolls around, so it's publicity for the company. Of course, many of the WWE fans of the world likely have no idea TNA is even a wrestling company and certainly don't think it's something worth finding out about. And really, what are the chances Flair starts talking up TNA while accepting his induction as a member of the Four Horsemen?
Somewhere safely between slim and none.
Another fascinating aspect of all this is that this could very well be the opening salvo fired by WWE in an attempt to lure Flair back into the fold. With the WWE Network upcoming and with Flair being such a big part of its video library, naturally, they would rather not have to freeze him out completely due to the fact that he works for TNA. Bringing him back would mean he could play a much larger part in anything they have planned to that end, which simply makes the most sense, all things considered. Yes, the shine has definitely rubbed off Flair's phony retirement -- and pro wrestling fans have great memories and won't soon forget the way he went out of the company -- but having him in WWE is now far preferable to having him in TNA.
The next few months should be a very interesting time indeed.
UPDATE: PWTorch is reporting that Flair told fans at an autograph signing in North Carolina today that he would, in fact, be on stage for the induction of the Four Hoursemen at the HOF ceremony.

They let Nash out..
of his contract to come back to WWe last year for Rumble.. and they had a huge angle set up w/ the crappy MEM.. that Spike wanted really badly. So, it they’ll let Nash do it, I can’t see them caring what Flair does either. He’s been on the shelf & in dire need of time off to get surgery. This could be a blessing for all around.. it gets Flair out of TnA.. because he is a bit of a cancer.. the last trip overseas, not working in NY, plus he’s a drain on them financially. If WWe gets him, he can earn much more money & have better prospects for his aging body, and be able to get the needed therapies. It clearly will help WWE as well, for the above reasons.. plus its Flair & the 2 highest people on the Stamford Totem Pole love Ric.. that being HHH & Vince.

Honestly, why not let him?
If anything, I’d do it just to remind the world that TNA really isn’t much competition. I mean if we’re all honest that’s the truth. They obviously would have the potential to be competition if they were a well-run promotion, but that hasn’t been the came in a long time.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
I just wish he'd give up the ring
Go back to the WWE, maybe host his own show on the new network.
Props to him for wanting to work, but it’s time Ric.

my question is why this version
And not the version with Ole Anderson?

Dick or not, Ole doesn’t need wrestling and he doesn’t need Vince and that drives some people crazy.
And the 4 horsement don't need Ole, yup problem solved. : )

because
nobody likes Ole and Ole likes nobody. Also everybody seems to like Barry who was better in every way than Ole. So basically Barry deserves it and it will make people happy that he gets in whereas Ole doesnt deserve it as much and would make people mad that he gets in.

Absolutely not.
If, I’m Dixie or especially Arn, Windham, Tully…. Flair has already had his moment in the sun, if he were to be on stage at the HoF he would only take the spotlight from the others. That’s not fair to them, but I guess the argument could be made that they wouldn’t be there without Flair. Still, I would have him there in the crowd, maybe come up afterwards like Nash and xpac last year… Arn at least, deserves his moment, for himself.
And why should Flair be granted such amnesty from anyone? After everything he’s done, especially in the past 5 years…
Money.
Flair being there means money for everyone. Plus, it does make the most sense to have him there. He’s the biggest superstar of them all. By far.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.
TNA won’t make a dime off this. Really WWE should pay TNA a booking fee for his services for the two nights, but we all know that won’t happen.
Personally I wouldn’t blame TNA if they play hardball with Flair over this. They would be in their rights to stop him, especially as they were intentionally blindsided by the move. It’s one thing to be in the audience for the induction of former colleagues and even be shown on the WWE website putting over TNA’s rival’s Hall Of Fame, quite another to be a centrepiece of the event itself.

TNA likely won't make anything off this
but I was speaking from the perspective of WWE and why they would want him back after the bullshit he’s pulled.

Obviously he’s the biggest star out of them all but c’mon…There was talk of putting Arn in solo last year…If I’m him, I’d prefer my own induction. But the more I think about it the more I think there has to be more to the story (like the article says)
Why induct them now? There’s no shortage of talent to choose from (by wwe’s criteria) so why would they go with the horsemen (with or without flair) now? Why not wait until Flair is back in the fold, which we all know will happen inevitably.
They definitely want Flair back. Sooner rather than later.
This is a chance for TNA to stand up for itself for once. There’s no way they should allow Flair to just come and go as he pleases, to arguably their chief competitor no less. IF they let him go, they should just let him go, full release.
Besides Ole, I guess the other reason they're specifically inducting this group is to skirt around the Benoit issue
Just inducting The Horsemen in general would mean he got in by default

There should be no reason for Flair not to go. The Horsemen are the only group, stable whatever you want to call it that was around more than a decade unlike other incarnations afterwards and even the dominance of the NWO in the 90’s. Throughout the many many different members of the Horsemen, even though Flair was the main singles draw, Arn with Tully during the golden days of the NWA has their hands in being just as much of a draw. Together they had some great and memorable feuds. Most notable the ones with Magnum TA and Dusty. If it wasn’t for the way things were being run back then, with all eventually getting fed up with it and heading the WWF for a stint, I don’t think they’d split what I feel was the best version in the picture that’s shown. The interesting thing about when they did go to WWF the first time, even though they didn’t go together, they all made their mark. Arn and Tully won the tag titles and even teaching the younger tag teams what they knew. Shawn Michaels even said they learned alot from them. Flair did one of the memorable debuts when he pronounced himself the REAL WORLD’S CHAMPION and even had the WHC to back it up. Now those that know what was going on knew that Flair had a falling out with Jim Herd who was basically running things and told him to go fuck himself cause the championship belt……yes belt is his. Barry even though won tag titles with Mike Rotunda wasn’t actually a member until he came back to the NWA. If things weren’t ran like shit in the late 80’s, the NWA would still be one of top promotions in the world. The Horsemen along with the major talent they they were a big part of them competing with WWF. Though alot may not admit it during that, they were a WWF’s main competition since the AWA pretty much lost any steam after Vince raided just about all their top stars in the early 80’s, most notably Hogan but he was already frustrated with Verne by then. That though is for another time to talk about. I don’t really see it a big deal about the induction. He’ll accept it, maybe reminisce a bit and get a chance to see some familiar faces which I’m sure he hasn’t in a long time, then be on his way. If anyone is to make big deal about it….. it’d be TNA. There sure wouldn’t be the stables you have seen during the years if it wasn’t for the Horsemen even though as mention there were slight incarnations of it afterwards. The most famous Evolution but it wasn’t really any kind of comparison to the Horsemen since it was more like bringing in younger guys to get a rub off the top stars during that time in HHH and Flair. TNA’s Fortune was a little bit more like them but there were still gaps.

You just never know w/ TNA
WWE gave Foley free props on their programming when he was under contract and it seemed to have fueled a bad situation. Maybe the indirect goal is to get Flair involved in The Network down the road so undermining TNA is really a bonus to a great decision in giving props to a truly legendary and deserving stable.
A couple issues here
TNA contracts for their top tier performers are not restrictive like WWE contracts. Flair showing up there will not likely be a breach of contract and TNA will not be able to force WWE into a booking fee for Flair. Vince and Flair are very cool and believe that Flair has probably faxed WWE his TNA contract for WWE lawyers to dissect. The last thing TNA would want to do is release Flair after losing Booker, Nash and Foley already to WWE in one year.
Ole Anderson was HATED even by members of the Horsemen. Go back and read Flair’s own statements about what was the best version of the Horsemen. He always said JJ, Tully, Windham, Arn and Himself. Ole placed himself in this position and there should be no surprise after all Ole did to Flair as a booker of WCW. Issues aside, I agree this is the best version of the Horsemen and anyone arguing for Lex Luger to be inducted with them should be shot.
Flair may not have known when WWE would be inducting the Horsemen but trust he knew it was going to happen and that it possibly could happen while he was under TNA contract.
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
I can’t see why TNA would want to hold on to Flair at this point. Besides being an ambassador and doing public appearances he hasn’t been of much help to them. On camera, he’s done Fortune and had a memorable promo feud with Jay Lethal but not much else.
He is way past his prime, has no business still being in the ring and is a financial burden. I would hope TNA takes this opportunity to let him go. Of the group consisting of Booker, Nash and Foley only Booker seems like a loss. TNA should learn from their mistakes and let go of all these old stars who cost a lot a but don’t make much of a dent in ratings, gate, ppvs or merch.
Let WWE have Flair. Then get rid of Hogan and Eric Bischoff. Let whoever wants them have them.
