On this date in WCW history: Ric Flair is stripped of the NWA title, but not the belt

Because "The Nature Boy" didn't get his $25,000 deposit back, which was required to carry the NWA strap.

WCW President Jim Herd, who thought Flair at 42 was too old (ha!) to stay in the spotlight, started heaping on the gimmicks and less-than-flattering angles as a way to downgrade the aging legend, who refused to play ball or take a pay cut.

Whoo!

He was eventually fired, as champion, and took the belt with him to his new home in Stamford after the promotion failed to reimburse him for the 25-large, and on September 8, 1991, the NWA title was officially vacated.

Whoo!

Flair would appear on WWF television with the actual belt and claim to be the "real" world champion, which no doubt served as motivation for WCW to file suit and eventually buy it back from him for the original $25,000 -- plus interest.
