WWE Network announced for 2012 debut

Yes, you did see that promo on Raw tonight tonight (Sept. 5, 2011) that was actually an announcement for the long awaited WWE Network that will make its debut on cable television sometime in 2012.

Here's a bit from the WWE.com story that went up shortly after the teaser aired:

As millions of WWE Universe members witnessed while watching WWE Raw SuperShow Monday night, something big is coming to WWE that will change not just the squared circle, but all of entertainment.

It's the WWE Network. And, as the world learned this week, it's on its way in 2012. All we know is that it'll be a brand new day for watching the greatest matches, moments and Superstars in sports-entertainment history.

Vince McMahon has been toying with the idea of creating the WWE Network for a long time now and it would seem that dream is finally coming to fruition. It seems odd, though, that so little details were offered up. That could be because they're having trouble cutting deals with cable systems, a hurdle NFL Network has been trying to overcome since its inception in 2003 and a battle that is still ongoing.

The WWE Universe Twitter account was asking for retweets from people who want the WWE Network on their cable or satellite systems in 2012, so read into that what you may.

Either way, the process has to be far enough along for them to run stories and unveil the official promo for it on Raw. They also opened a Facebook account that already has 6,700 likes and counting. They certainly have a library big enough to fill an entire 24 hours every day. Can you imagine the Monday Night Wars playing out again in rewind form in 2012? How many people would watch something like that?

McMahon has always been adamant, though, that WWE would offer live content and programming if it launched its own channel while not interfering with any television deals they currently have with USA and SyFy. I guess we'll have to take the wait and see approach to see how this all unravels.

Excited at the prospect of the WWE Network showing up sometime next year?

I'd be excited, provided it's not a special premium channel you have to pay extra for

There’s a hell of a lot of stuff they can use, too. Actual shows, original programming like NXT or Superstars or whatever else, those DVDs that they sell…(and, I’m sure they’d play plenty of direct-to-video WWE Studios movies)

If they get it on basic packages, it could solve several problems

Trips wants tag teams/cruiserweights? Give them their own shows. More people working, more people given a chance to get over, more money coming into the E.
They could have a divas show. They could show FCW. If they’re on good enough terms, maybe some Mexican/Japanese promotions. So many possibilities, but they’re screwed if it isn’t “free”.

PS: The best reason to pray this works: Bobby Heenan/Gorilla Monsoon. Or just Heenan.

Release...the KITTIES!
