Kurt Angle gets upset about spot in WWE list of all time greatest wrestlers, apologizes the next day

Photo

When WWE went back to the well one more time to find another subject to use for a DVD release late last year, they came up with a tried and true concept -- a list of the top 50 superstars of all time.

Once the list was made and released, it served as a reminder that pro wrestling is a business dominated by a group of people that are far more interested in how they appear at any particular moment than they are in being objective and giving an unbiased view on things. Really what it comes down to is the list was made to reflect whoever was in favor with WWE at the time of its conception, which is to say, it's complete bullshit and shouldn't be taken seriously.

That hasn't stopped certain folks from doing exactly that, though, and the latest offender of this is current TNA Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle.

The Olympic hero was apparently just recently exposed to the list and upon learning that he was ranked an unflattering number 34, he flipped his lid. Twitter being the social media giant and on-the-go therapy tool that it is, that's where he chose to air his grievances. He starts with his beef with his spot.

"I was #34 of Wwe All time Greatest? Tell You what, take Me off the list. I'd rather not be on it, if I wasn't top 5. Who Ranks Wrestlers?"

He immediately makes it clear that he wants off the list because he's way too low on it for his liking. He then completely undercuts his own argument by mocking whoever made the list and, by extension, the list itself. Which means he doesn't really have anything to be upset about to begin with. That doesn't stop him from continuing, though.

"I have never been More Insulted By Wwe top 50.#34 to Me Is a kick to the balls! Take Me out of ratings.please.U think fans will buy that crap."

Not only would fans buy that crap, they did buy that crap. Still, his being upset at the list is amazing because he has to know that his ranking is directly affected by the fact that he's one of the lead guys for the WWE's direct competitor. Wrestling politics being what they are, it seems odd he would get so upset over such a thing. But, by the same token, it's easy for guys to get lost within their world and become such blind marks for themselves.

He wasn't completely negative regarding the list, however. In fact, he agreed with the decision to award the number one slot to Shawn Michaels. Then he seems to come to grips with the matter and blows it off.

"Shawn Michaels Deserves #1. He has Been Putting On Awesome Matches for Well Over 20something Years. I Will Not Complain. It is What It Is!!!"

Kurt and I have something in common here. Whether the list is legitimate or not, HBK is definitely number one, no questions asked. But in an almost bizarre turn of events, after going off in these separate tweets on his placement on the list, the very next day Angle changed course. Indeed, he's not only apologizing for his tweets but also saying he's proud of being included in the list at all.

"I Want to Apologize to Everyone that I disrespected with My Comments about Wwe's Rankings. I truly Am Proud to Be in Top 50. Thank U 2 Wwe."

There's a lesson here, Cagesiders. Don't be a mark for yourself and don't get upset over a list that was made with little to no integrity involved in the actual end result.

For those of you that don't remember the full list or just don't want to go searching for it, I've included it after the jump.

Kurt Angle is a complete dipshit.

He also probably wouldn’t make my top 35 wrestlers, not that my list is any more or less legit than anyone else’s.

Really? Not even top 35?

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Not all-time in the WWE.

Most of the guys listed above him on WWE’s kayfabe list are indeed better than him, as a matter of fact.

It depends...

On the criteria.

But really, it’s a WWE list for WWE fans so what do guys like Angle and Bret Hart expect?

It’s not like this list is going to be etched in stone and buried beneath the ground for future generations to find. The WWE will probably have a new “Top 50” list in 10 years.

DiBiase at #26

Fail

Kurt Angle would be pretty low on my list of Top 50 guys, too, if he made it at all (which is questionable)

That said, the list itself is pretty BS, as we discussed a few weeks ago, so I don’t get why Angle is complaining. He’s worked for the WWE, so he should know how politically driven a lot of their stuff is.

Cold-blooded.

Even if Benoit was around, where does he fit in? Even trying to think in the fucked up terms WWE uses, where would he be? I can’t see any higher than 20. And yeah, he probably would have blown his stack.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

by Geno Mrosko on Sep 3, 2011 2:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Where did they put Eddie Gurerro?

They probably would have done the politically correct thing and ranked them close by. I’d have easily put both men in the top 20.

The Benoit dvd the WWE put out years before the murders is one of the prizes of my sports dvds because we’ll never see it again. I feel like I should be ashamed for coveting it…like I’m keeping old porn of Traci Lords that should have been recalled [I’m not btw lol].

higher than 3-0?

he doesnt make top 50 imo

He did go out with a Hbang, though.

Damn this is the second dick that Nog had to pull out of my ass and beat me over the head with! As couture wasnt bad enough. Dont doubt NNR or even more Big Nog.

27. Fabulous Moolah

That’s what pissed him off.

My fellow Americans, I have not been entirely truthful with you. I did gagoogidy that girl. I gashmoygadied her gaflavity with my googus. And I am sorry.

by GoForthAndDie on Sep 3, 2011 2:41 AM EDT reply actions

Moolah would beat your ass take your lunch, smartphone and not break a nail

She was a legit female shooter that was trained in a strictly regimented era. She went undefeated for decades when that still meant something.

undefeated?? dude it’s a work.

by timbo_slice on Sep 3, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh boy....

Of course it’s a work however, every territory had a ‘shooter’ someone who knew how to legit break someone in the ring in case a performer refused to do what the promoter asked like drop the title. Moolah was used in this category plenty of times even against men. The most famous shoot she ever had was on Wendy Richter who refused to drop the Women’s Belt. Vince had Moolah dress in a mask and shoot on her to get the belt off her.

In the era of Moolah and Sammartino, these guys really knew how to mat wrestle and break someone. So to be undefeated in that environment meant something to them. They were legit tough guys that would fuck you up in the ring legit no matter what the promoter wanted if you crossed a line in a match. Today’s guys aren’t like that and for Moolah as a female to survive and thrive in that era says a lot. Boinking the promoter helps keep you undefeated too but she deserves respect for her legit toughness.

Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...

Killer Kowalski's a favor to Triple H.

All that is. Billy Graham higher than Jack Briscoe is a joke. Cena higher than Flair or Dusty is ridiculous. Batista shouldn’t even be on the list. Randy Orton shouldn’t be on the list. Simple. Harley Race is fine where he is. Where’s Vader? Where’s Sting? Hell, where’s Anderson? Arn Anderson is better than half that list. It’s a list made by the same people who come up with names to enter in the HOF.

FUCKIN LOVE TE TOP 5

1. Shawn Michaels
2. Undertaker
3. Steve Austin
4. Bret Hart
5. Rock

I’ve never considered myself as a legend – just a simple man with heart.

by Chorongota on Sep 4, 2011 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

Quite Frankly...

I do not see it as a countdown of who’s the best among all WWE Superstars but merely a list of their 50 Greatest. It’s like the NBA’s 50 greatest players way back in the 90s. Even though Flair and Hogan are way below the ranks, you cannot deny the fact that they are on that list. This is simply what WWE thinks are the 50 greatest wrestlers they ever had, period.
