On this date in WWF history: Kurt Angle submits Stone Cold Steve Austin to win the title

Alright Cagesiders, there's a lot of crazy stuff happening here and if you're a longtime pro wrestling fan like I am, there are plenty of Easter eggs from this Unforgiven main event, which took place on September 23, 2001.

First and foremost, Kurt Angle gets cheered and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin does not. Yes, I realize it's Pittsburgh, the Olympian's hometown, but it's difficult to hear Angle's walkout music without the "YOU SUCK" chants.

It actually feels incomplete!

It should also be noted that Austin goes over clean, as he should (in his heel gimmick), via ankle lock, to cough up the strap. And Kurt has hair!

Part two of this epic main event, which took place on this date in WWF history, after the jump.

Star-divide

Two of the best of all time Cagesiders, how do you rate this pay-per-view headliner?

Kurt Angle vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at Unforgiven 2001 gets __ out of 5 stars.

This only further clears up for me

How screwed up Angle is now. Last night I remember thinking he looked like he hadn’t had anything to eat but pain pills in a month.

Freaking skeletal.

It’s pretty bad. Looking at Angle today you’d think this match was twenty years ago.

For all those that tell me Steve Austin was a terrible or simple ok worker,

I say look at his 2001 year after neck fusion surgery. The man went out and went stride or stride, bump for bump with the best on the planet. Kurt and Austin were great in this match and I’d rate this 4 out of 5 stars but the SummerSlam match I’d rate 4 1/4 stars, 5 stars if there was a legit finish.

It just feels so wrong to no have the you suck chants in Kurt Angle's intro

but there was no way Pittsburgh was going to do that to a fellow Yinzer

Smart to have a patriotic wrestler win the belt less than 2 weeks after 9/11.

Not saying that the WWE should have exploited 9/11 for business reasons, but it’s too bad they couldn’t have given Angle the extended title run (which he always deserved, anyway). Heaven forbid Triple H be denied the chance to hold the belt at Wrestlemania and make racist jokes at Booker T. The post-WCW era of wrestling was a messed-up time.
