John Cena won the WWE championship tonight at Night of Champions in Buffalo, the tenth time he has won that title. Goodbye, Alberto Del Rio's title reign, we hardly knew ye.

While I find that extremely funny...

I am also extremely sad that events conspired to make such an image possible.

Release...the KITTIES!

That's pretty hilarious.

Well, it’s time to really accept that there’s no savior within the wrestling business because it’ll (TNA, various indy companies, Heyman, Cornette, various wrestlers, etc) be eaten alive before it has a chance to really provoke a challenge. The only thing that can inspire WWE is WWE.

When are we going to get a backlash on the Cena backlash?

It’s getting so predictable just shitting on everything he does….and some of the snarks i Buffalo should realize that Cena can, in fact, wrestle.

I wish people would boo Cena during his promos, instead of his matches.

The only thing he apparently has learned to sell is merchandise.

Bravo sir, bravo

CM Punk sure looked MORE than worthy.

Not to mention Edge, Randy Orton, The Miz, Triple H and Shawn Michaels. In fact Barrett looked like a freakin’ main-eventer when feuding with Cena, and has hardly looked as good since going over to Smackdown; also, over half the wrestlers in WWE use a DDT of some sort, and I haven’t seen anyone with with one since, I don’t know….Tommy Dreamer, I guess.

However the “top guy” in the WWE is is going to be forced down your throat, because they want to make a clear distinction between their top guys and the Alex Rileys of the world. Sorry, Cena is not going to go into a prolonged feud with Dolph Ziggler over the US Title any time soon, that’s the reality of the situation. Is Cena involved in too many main events? Yes. Would it be great if Daniel Bryan and Shameus got more main events? Damn straight. But Cena works his ass off and, most of the time, gives really good/great PPV matches, which is what the WWE wants more than anything. And hell, he’s an EXCELLENT seller.

I would have been just as thrilled if del Rio won last night, but I liked the match no matter who won, and I’m not going to begrudge Cena’s spot in the company because he wins too much (and he does lose frequently).

it's not about being on the internet

I’ve been a wrestling fan for 20+ years now, long before the internet was used like it is today. I don’t care that much about Daniel Bryan and I only know what CHIKARA is thanks to Botchamania.

I don’t hate Cena for being on top, he earned that, I also tend to agree that he is a lot better of a wrestler then most give him credit for, and of course his charity work is nothing short of amazing. My big problem is exactly what buzz is saying below, when Cena gets beat down by Miz and Riley for 20 minutes, then pops up smiling like he just woke up from a refreshing nap to immediately win the match, that does absolutely nothing for the credibility of the two guys who have just been beating him down for 20 minutes. That kind of stuff does nothing in building interest/heat for new guys. I literally change the channel any time Cena is in the main event of RAW because I know how it’s going to end.

It sounds to me that you have a problem with how Cena is booked.

And I agree with that sentiment, for Cena bouncing back after taking a beating from Miz and A-Ry is how WWE Creative wrote up the match before it was performed. It was also the shittiest I Quit match I’ve ever seen…..but in Cena’s defense, during those 20 minutes he sure did look like he was in a lot of pain, right? It was Cena’s job to take that 20-minute beating and then pop back like nothing happened and win the match (and there’s been other matches where he didn’t make it look so obvious).

The WWE wants a lot of matches where the face takes a beating, miraculously recovers and gets the win, and they consider John Cena the best man to do that job. In between the time the bell rings and he turns into SuperCena, he’s one of the best wrestlers in the world.

yep that's definitely my problem with him
but in Cena’s defense, during those 20 minutes he sure did look like he was in a lot of pain, right?

You’re right, Cena is very good at selling another guys offense during the match, but it’s after the fact that bothers me. It’s the tiny little things like limping to the ring or grabbing your tender ribs that really do it for me. If you look at Punk from RAW this past week, he was still selling the beating he took at NOC. He used his hurt knee when he did the GTS on Miz and when he got up from the mat he was limping like he had just re aggravated the injury. It’s not just about the physical aspect of wrestling, it’s also about the mental, and I just feel like Cena lacks a little in that department, but as you point out, maybe it’s not so much Cena’s fault as it is of the WWE Creative machine.

And hell, he’s an EXCELLENT seller.

Of merchandise? Yes, yes he is. If you mean anything else you are completely wrong. Go back to the original Nexus beat down and debut. 8 guys laying on the Passion of the Cena in the middle of the ring for 10 minutes. I remember him taking three finishers. I remember him getting choked with the ring ropes. I remember mayhem and carnage. And I remember a week later, not a single noticeable hint of anything having happened.

There’s a reason he’s referred to as Super-Cena. You mention him losing? Okay, on the occasion it does happen, what is the end game? Is it to make his opponent look better? Absolutely not. It’s to give Cena a reason for revenge. And it’s never a clean loss. He doesn’t just lose. There’s interference, there’s distractions, there’s cheating.

The story coming out of Wrestlemania had nothing to do with Miz’s huge Mania title defense; rather it was how the Rock had screwed Cena. Miz took a backseat the entire program, and when he managed to get back to the front of it, the WWE chose remind us it was the Rock and Cena we needed to pay attention to.

I don’t dislike John Cena. By no means at all. I think he’s great guy, his Make-A-Wish work is truly incredible, the guy loves the business, and I’ve seen enough of his older work to know he is capable of much more than what he delivers. I don’t sit here and preach that he needs a heel turn or this and that nonsense you read on the internet. I just think it’s time to recognize you can’t be in the so-called reality era and have a guy who could probably get shot on TV and no-sell it. I still think someone just needs to bring a green rock to the ring and hand it to him and see if it puts him down.

Don't hate the player, hate the game

The WWE brass, that is, because “Super-Cena” is EXACTLY what the WWE wants out of its top face. The formula has been in place since Hogan’s prime, and “reality era” or not that’s not going to change anytime soon. Didn’t CM Punk himself get beat up at NoC, and the very next night used his “busted” knee to GTS The Miz? Cena sells when it’s appropriate (to put over the beating from his opponent so that his comeback looks even more remarkable) and doesn’t when the story calls for it (like in your Nexus example).

I’m not going to defend how the WWE books Cena, and he is certainly made to go over more frequently than any one wrestler deserves, but when you separate stroylines from actual wrestling, Cena gives a wonderful performance in the ring. It’s obvious that a lot of fans have their minds made up about him before the bell rings.

I saw that on Botchamania, after Orton won with the punt.

Rec'd

and thanks for the reminder that I actually paid money to occupy a seat at Staples Center to watch that shit-fest of a main event take place….
