WWE Raw results and reactions from Night of Champions go home show on Sept. 12 in Canada
WWE Raw Supershow, which was anything but that tonight (Sept. 12), emanated from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and marked the first night the company was up against the juggernaut that is ESPN's Monday Night Football. Did they bring the heat like we were hoping? Oh hell no.
Before we get to the reactions to the show, I'd like to give a shout to Cagesider commenter Ruben Tisch, who wins the coveted "Comment of the Night" award with this gem from the Raw live blog thread following the opening segment: "Is Vince Russo mailing scripts? Seriously?" Well done, Ruben.
If you want full results click here. Time to get to all the reactions from the show.
- Remember when we tried to figure out if Triple H would bury CM Punk once he got involved in a feud with him? That officially happened tonight. If there was any doubt that would be the case, they were removed with the final segment of the show. I was glad they closed with those two squaring off verbally but Trips let his ego take over and he SMASHED Punk on the mic. Not just got the better of him, he literally killed him. Punk came off as nothing more than a whiny child who wished he could have gotten famous sooner and if that wasn't the intention, and I can't imagine it was, they failed massively somewhere in the delivery. Probably when Triple H made successive points that it was on Punk, no one else, that he didn't get over with fans. While that's not totally the case and even the biggest superstars needed hot angles to jump start their careers, it was such a solid argument that fans are siding with Triple H instead of Punk. Is that the point here? His ego has seemingly taken over and Punk is being led to the slaughter, looking weaker and weaker each week. Hell, they even aired a Triple H highlight package during the show to hype his return match at Night of Champions. It was the most unnecessary video ever played and vanity at its finest.
- Having buried the entire angle the way I did, you'd think I hated everything about it. This is not the case. I actually loved the way they ended the show. As Punk went into shoot mode, by using his own and Triple H's real names, his microphone was cut. Triple H played like he didn't know what was going on and gave him his microphone, which was still working. That microphone was promptly cut, as well. This was great because it provided an extra bit of intrigue heading into the pay-per-view on Sunday and assures us that Triple H isn't the one who is running the show. There are other powers at play here and at least that's something to look forward to in an angle that has been all but taken out back and shot dead.
- This show, on the whole, was garbage. It was the weakest effort from WWE in months, which is surprising considering it was both the go-home show to Night of Champions and the first night they were up against Monday Night Football. It felt like everyone was buried and very few guys looked good by the time it went off the air.
- Speaking of burials and making everyone look bad, I thought it especially egregious that both Mark Henry and Alberto Del Rio, the heels in their respective feuds against Randy Orton and John Cena, were made to look like, well... wimps. Henry, at one point, literally ran away from Orton and only ever attacked when Cody Rhodes had laid Cena out. This would be fine if you want to book a heel like a coward but for consistency's sake, he's been portrayed as a monster that destroys all. And this guy is running away? Really? Same for Alberto Del Rio. He spends the entire night throwing Ricardo Rodriguez under the bus, even sacrificing him to John Cena so he can cower to the top of the ramp. This is a guy that had fantastic matches with Daniel Bryan and John Morrison where he looked very strong just weeks ago. Both feuds were also booked to look very clear how the matches will play out this Sunday. Not the right way to head into the pay-per-view.
Follow along after the jump for reactions to the rest of the show ... if you dare.
- Bret Hart being involved in the show is fine and dandy due to it being in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, but giving him a promo up against Del Rio and then inserting him into a match just to get him a glorified sharpshooter submission win was cheap. Posing him around was too. Do that shit at house shows, not on Raw. Plus, he already had that nice little nostalgia run.
- An extension of that was the crowd. What was wrong with everyone in that building tonight? Normally the folks up in the Great White North are rowdy and put American fans to shame. At times tonight, I literally wondered if they were napping.
- David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty absolutely cannot continue to tell us they aren't boring while simultaneously being aggressively bland and monotone. How did they go from being tag team champions to getting buried week after week by a man over 60-years-old and whoever he decides to bring out to whoop ass on any particular night? I suppose I shouldn't complain too much, as Sheamus, a Smackdown star, got to come out and look strong ... against jobbers that are being booked like they made a pass at Stephanie McMahon. But let's not split hairs.
- I'm thoroughly unimpressed with this Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger feud. Apparently so is WWE, as the match added to Night of Champions for the Untied States championship is a fatal four-way that will also involve Alex Riley and John Morrison. Useless and a waste of time. That U.S. title needs to be merged with the Intercontinental title as soon as possible. Neither of them mean a damn thing at the moment and that's not the way it should be.
- R-Truth yelling at the crowd during the Miz vs. Kofi Kingston match was the most entertaining aspect of the entire show. Take that for what you will.
- Here was my major problem with the Kelly Kelly vs. Vickie Guerrero match: Why did Kelly have to win via snake roll-up on a distracted Vickie? This wouldn't be a problem under most circumstances but Kelly was dominating the match and making a mockery of Vickie. I know they wanted to advance the Ziggler vs. Swagger storyline but this was the wrong way to do it. It's fundamentals like this that WWE just ignores that makes fans hate the product.
- Remember this day, my friends. Randy Orton was pinned by Cody Rhodes. He was actually defeated on the last Raw before Night of Champions. Sure, it was under nefarious circumstances but the very fact that he laid down for the 1-2-3 on the last Raw before the big pay-per-view shocked the hell out of me. I expect that the receipt is coming at the Smackdown taping tomorrow night.
That does it for us. Now it's your turn to sound off in the comments with your thoughts on tonight's show. I thought it was lackluster ... actually, it was downright dreadful. Agree or disagree? And why?

Why can't the WWE do anything right?
Also, at Night of Champions, every championship is supposed to be on the line, right? Where are the U.S. Championship and Intercontinental Championship matches?

There's a Fatal Four Way schedged for the US
dunno what Morrison’s doing in there, but whatevs.
I’m sure they’ll announce an IC match on Friday though there’s absolutely no buildup for it since Cody Rhodes has been busy with Orton…

This was the worst Raw in months. I’m way lenient in my “scoring” of shows, but dude, this stank. I too was surprised that it was so weak, all things considered.

the punk storyline is officially screwed, it had a lot of potential, but wwe rushed everything as usual, and now we are gettin bored of the whole thing week after week, also, i dont understand wtf is wrong with the writers, they make del rio look as a really credible heel, make you start thinking the guy can actually beat the crap out of cena, and then they do this nonsense, its plain stupid, also mark henry, they book him as a monster of monsters and tonight they decide to make him run away from orton? W-T-F !? rhodes pinning orton was awesome sauce, makes me wonder if they are thinkin about giving rhodes a big push, i mean, the guy just efffin pined super orton !! woot !!
This is what no competition get you....

This.
Actually, he should have encouraged them to keep clapping, as it was the only applause of the entire show.
Pathetic excuse for a show and a miserable lead in to NOC.
It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.
Am I the only one that thought triple h looked weak?
All he did was say that punk had to get over when the crowd was cheering punks name. trips was just repeating himself over and over and it was so confusing because punk had always been over

I don't think he looked weak...
…but I certainly don’t think he ‘buried’ Punk. Whether he was trying to bury him or not, the repetition of “You have to get over with the fans!” while he is clearly over with the fans doesn’t make Punk look bad. The only part that was suspect to me was Triple H’s little trip down “I like Cena too, guys!” lane. It sounded like he was trying to garner the fans love, and I don’t think it worked.
Punk handled himself very well in my opinion. Throwing the fact that he was more popular than DX in Philly was the end of Triple H’s fan-love demand. The ending was great also.

Triple H didn’t bury Punk, in my opinion. In fact, Triple H went out of his way to list all of Punk’s accomplishments and say that he (HHH) has been wrong in the past. The point of the promo was to air his supposed personal grievances with Punk, which I thought he did well. Also, it’s hard to successfully bury someone when you end the segment laid out in the ring from one tap with a microphone. I do, think, however, that the angle has seriously lost steam because they basically come out and have the same conversation every week, and the plot doesn’t advance. I was definitely more into that conversation the first three times I heard it.

This did have a hilarious "Suck it" by Punk though

That was hilarious. Truly a moment of creative genius.

I just caught the segment and I gotta say I didn’t get Triple-H burying Punk at all, in fact Triple-H sounded downright delusional stating that Punk wasn’t over with the fans. Since in reality he’s been over with them since he appeared on ECW and continued that with his SES run until now. Triple-H sounded like Vince out of touch and donwright in denial of what the product and the fans wanted, it was headshaking to hear him trot out the typical WWE political bs as reason why Punk hasn’t been pushed.
The only problem that I had with the segment is that Punk once gain held back, he should have destroyed Triple-H by using the fact that the WWE stopped listening to the fans years ago and they only thing they listen to now is Vince’s rants. He had plenty of chances to really shoot and talk about other superstars who’ve been over with the fans but because of they weren’t Vince’s boys didn’t get the push they deserved.
While I agree that the angle has lost it, I think it went off the rails the moment Nash was introduced so now it’s just throwing dirt on another angle with tons of potential that was ruined because Vince is out of touch with the product.

I think part of the problem was also that there's a fine line they have to make sure not to cross when talking about pushes
They went pretty far by talking about getting over with the fans, but they can’t start talking a lot about getting or not getting pushes without getting into the booking which of course would reveal that we’re not watching real fights.
