On this date in WWE history: Records are set at 'The Big Event' in Toronto
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), apparently having run out of ideas when naming high-profile shows, concocted "The Big Event" for its trip to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on this date in WWE history.
Big indeed.
61,470 fans packed the Exhibition Stadium on August 28, 1986, setting an outdoor attendance record as well as an attendance record for wrestling shows (one that would be broken a few months later at Wrestlemania III).
Untelevised (but later released on VHS), The Big Event featured a headlining bout between Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff, one that saw the Hulkster eat wood when Bobby Heenan whacked him with a bar stool to get Mr. 1-derful disqualified.
It should also be noted that neither a dragon nor a snake would appear in Ricky Steamboat's "Snake Pit" match against Jake Roberts, as the animals were prevented from crossing the U.S./Canadian border.
Silly Canucks!
The Big Event results and video after the jump.
The Killer Bees defeated Jimmy Jack Funk & Hoss Funk (w/Jimmy Hart)
The Magnificent Muraco (w/Mr. Fuji) fought King Tonga to a time-limit draw (20:00)
Ted Arcidi defeated Tony Garea via bear-hug submission (Garea was a substitute for an injured Tony Atlas)
The Junkyard Dog defeated Adrian Adonis (w/Jimmy Hart) via count-out
"The Rebel" Dick Slater defeated "Iron" Mike Sharpe
Bobby Heenan, King Kong Bundy, & Big John Studd defeated Lou Albano & The Machines
Ricky Steamboat defeated Jake Roberts in a Snake Pit Match
Billy Jack Haynes defeated Hercules Hernandez
The Fabulous Rougeaus defeated The Dream Team (Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake)
"King" Harley Race defeated Pedro Morales
Hulk Hogan defeated Paul Orndorff (w/Bobby Heenan) via disqualification to retain the WWF Championship
Complete with Gorilla Monsoon, controversial endings and a Killer Bees mask-switcheroo, this is an event that's guaranteed to please any fan of 80's pro wrestling.

Quick ?
How long was this show? I notice 25% more matches than a PPV these days.

the matches were all shorter than today, as well.

They gave Muraco and Tonga twenty minutes? Seems like there must be a story behind that. Aside from Hogan-Orndorff and Steamboat-Roberts, it doesn’t look like an exciting card on paper. No doubt Mike Sharpe put on a good show.
My thoughts exactly
My fellow Americans, I have not been entirely truthful with you. I did gagoogidy that girl. I gashmoygadied her gaflavity with my googus. And I am sorry.

Nitpicky, but...
They were just The Rougeau Bros at this point. They had not yet become ghetto fabulous.

Mr Wonderful had a nice run as top heel.
Then shrunk over time in every respect.
