On this date in ECW history: Raven comes, Dudley Boyz go

Photo

Turns out the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

That's a lesson Raven learned when he "flocked" to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1997 for a second run in the promotion after reinventing himself in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) two years prior.

When Eric Bischoff offered anyone in the WCW locker room the right to jump ship, Raven took him up on his offer and returned to ECW on August 26, 1999, to save Tommy Dreamer from the wrath of the Dudley Boyz.

Buh Buh Ray and D-Von had threatened to leave the promotion with the tag team titles and probably would have -- if not for the surprise return of Raven, who had a last-minute run-in to DDT and pin Buh Buh Ray, sending the Dudley Boyz to Stamford empty-handed, on this date in ECW history.

Video of Raven and Dreamer winning the belts after the jump.

Star-divide

Any Raven fans out there hoping for one last run in the big show? Or did his last stint in TNA convince you that some acts are better left in the indies?

Raven

Had he signed with WWF originally I think he could’ve had a good run, but now he should just stick to doing indie dates

I dunno, he's pushing...

50 so I think he’d best be used as an agent, helping younger guys with promos and their characters. That’s where Raven was top notch.

He couldn’t sign with the WWF originally. When Bischoff made the offer of giving anyone who wanted one a contractual release, what he didn’t say it was a conditional release and they couldn’t go to the WWF until their original contract expired. That’s why Raven was pretty much the only guy to take Bischoff up on his offer. He only had one year left on his contract and didn’t have a fat contract, so he decided to return to ECW for that year for similar money to what he was making in WCW.

God would I love for WWE to put out a DVD of the Dreamer/Raven feud. I wasn’t able to follow ECW at the time and could only read about it online. I think I’ve seen the better matches through Youtube and DVDs at this point, but those don’t carry all the buildup with them.

You must get chills watching that clip.

If not, learn to understand why you should.

Raven used to be one of my favorites when I watched wrestling

To this day Nevermore is still one of my favorite bands
