On May 26 1996 (coincidentally 15 years ago this coming Thursday) in Florence, South Carolina, the WWF In Your House: Beware of Dog PPV was knocked off the air after the opener by a huge thunderstorm. The matches kept going on in the building thanks to a backup generator and the minimal emergency lighting that it provided. Howard Finkel did the ring announcing on a megaphone. After they lost power and the satellite feed, Vince McMahon desperately tried to send out a message to the PPV viewers, and everything from right before the blackout through the end of the successful delivery of the message is in this YouTube video. I had never seen this before last night and figured that maybe nobody kept their tape of the live show. As for the show itself, all of the matches pretty much went on as scheduled. The lights came back on seconds into the previously unscheduled Jake Roberts vs Justin Hawk Bradshaw (John Layfield) match, so they aired the Shawn Michaels vs Davey Boy Smith match live. Michaels and Smith felt the show was ruined, and wanted to wait until Tuesday, when the literal dark matches would be rematched live from a Superstars taping in the traditional PPV replay slot. Their request was denied, and they had a bad match made worse by Michaels arguing with people at ringside. Their rematch a month later at King of the Ring a month later was MUCH better. "Beware of Dog 2" came off without a hitch. After the opener and main event from Sunday were aired, they went to North Charleston, South Carolina where they re-did the three previously advertised matches. For what it's worth, the off-air matches were indeed taped by the ringside cameras, as short clips were aired on the episode of Raw sandwiched by the two PPVs. The Caribbean Strap Match between Savio Vega and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin on Tuesday was excellent, but the original match may have even been better. According to those in attendance, the restless crowd was going nuts for everything while the two wrestlers whipped each other as loud as possible to make up for the lighting.
