That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Catch wrestling is fun!

Photo

First off, I love that picture.

Second off, I'm starting to love catch wrestling.

I stayed up from midnight to 9am watching a Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) show last night ... today ... whatever and it included a handful of matches from Inoki Genome Federation (IGF). Two were snoozers but one in particular was fantastic.

It was Josh Barnett taking on Hideki Suzuki and it reminded me a lot of the old Union of Wrestling Forces International (UWF-i) stuff that I had seen back in the day. That kind of submission grappling always appealed to me but when I discovered it, finding Japanese tapes from the early 1990s wasn't exactly all that easy.

Now that YouTube is around, you can find all sorts of wonderful stuff like this clip of Pride Fighting Championships veteran and Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba taking on Kiyoshi Tamura.

Star-divide

I need to find me some UWF-i tapes.

If you have any ideas for something that made you say "that was awesome!!!" pass it along. Make sure to include either your name or your SBNation handle -- whichever you'd like to be used -- and you'll get a shout out if your idea is used! Contact me at sergio.hernandez.tx@gmail.com.

The Barnett match had some slick chain wrestling in it.

The Voice and Mike Kogan were pretty funny as the commentators during the Pro Wrestling matches too.

I'm sad

I know those Japanese shows are long, but heck. After one hour in, Schiavello said it was a nine hour show. I knew I was fighting a losing battle. I primarily wanted to see Fedor, but I was really interesting in seeing Barnett too. His workout wrestling match before the June 2011 Strikeforce show was fun.

I faded during Takeshi Takaya but could catch a glimpse of most stuff. Can I just say that Antonio Inoki is insane and somehow awesome at the same time. INOKI JESUS!

I was pretty shocked myself at how good the Barnett match was and it how dam good Josh was working at pro wrestling match. First time I ever watched Barnett in a pro wrestling match and I must say he blew the expectations I had for him away

I posted this online a few weeks back, and Billy Robinson commented

Most were saying how amazing this scramble looked and even through it was worked, they ‘fought’ to stay on top and off their backs.

The Legend that is Billy Robinson commented:

"The reason they are both Catch wrestlers trained by me at Wigan style real Catch wrestling."

I enjoyed the Barnett match more than most matches on RAW every week.

I wouldn’t mind seeing something more like that in the WWE, at least every once in a while.

Barnett’s lucky enough that he was able to work matches with the IGF every now and then because-

1. There’s no way in hell Barnett could get over in the WWE, with his pudgy body and emphasis on chain submission wrestling.

2. If he is bought back into the UFC after the Cormier fight, then he won’t be allowed to do IGF matches anymore.
