WWE names top 25 matches of 2011
In five days, the the clock will strike midnight and the year 2011 will be no more. We'll all move on to 2012 and eagerly await the end of the world that those Mayan dudes predicted all that time ago. Or the calender just ends or some goofy old tale that is laughably dumb yet so many people buy into for some reason. Wait, that sounds like something I know.
But I digress.
As per usual, we can't look ahead to 2012 without first looking back at 2011 and WWE has done so by naming the top 25 matches of the past year. There were plenty to choose from. Undertaker defending the streak once more against Triple H, CM Punk winning the WWE title at Money in the Bank in a 35-minute classic against John Cena, hell, even The Rock coming back and looking like the most amazing athletic specimen on the entire roster more than seven years apart from his last match.
Enough with the introduction, though, let's get to the actual list (via WWE.com):
25. Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 27.
24. Yoshi Tatsu vs. Tyson Kidd from NXT
23. Edge vs. Kane Last Man Standing match on Smackdown
22. CM Punk vs. The Miz vs. Alberto Del Rio TLC match from at TLC
21. Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes Street Fight on Smackdown
20. The Miz vs. John Morrison Falls Count Anywhere match on Raw
19. Smackdown Elimination Chamber match at Elimination Chamber
18. Randy Orton vs. CM Punk Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules
17. Alberto Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio on Raw
16. Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler on Raw
15. Mark Henry vs. Daniel Bryan Steel Cage match on Smackdown
14. Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett Tables match at TLC
13. CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio at Capitol Punishment
12. The Miz vs. John Morrison vs. John Cena Steel Cage match at Extreme Rules
11. Mark Henry vs. Big Show at Vengeance
10. Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder match at Money in the Bank
9. Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler at Royal Rumble
8. The Rock and John Cena vs. The Miz and R-Truth at Survivor Series
7. The 40-man Royal Rumble

4. Raw Elimination Chamber match at Elimination Chamber

There's the list, Cagesiders. What do you think about it?

Rock's match being #8 is a joke.
but it’s WWE’s own list, so it’s really no surprise. I’m shocked a match from NXT is included. I figured WWE forgot Superstars and NXT even existed.
Punk/Ziggler from Raw last month is noticeably absent.
Also, John Cena vs. Rey Mysterio? Where Cena recaptures the WWE Title before Punk comes back? You’ve got to be kidding me.
A lot of matches on here aren't have worthy of being on this list, like that Rock-Cena tag match.
Randy Orton, CM Punk, Edge and Rey Mysterio are lighting up this list though
Tim Elliot had the best knockout of the year. FACT
Lmao at randy orton and wade barrets tables match
Being way higher on the list than the tlc main event hahaha weakest match on the card

i am the only one?
who finds HHH vs Taker at Mania to be terribly overrated?
No.
It was a crappy re-tread of the WM Main Event style. I am not against a match where two built-up stars throw bombs at one another in a titanic struggle until the third or fourth finisher finally ends it, but that match was not a good example of the style. That’s especially true considering that we just saw HBK and ’Taker work two matches that worked the style about a billion times better at the previous two WMs.
HHH vs. Undertaker
It was a bit excessive

that's what i was thinking
but i have to consider my anti HHH bias might’ve affected my appreciation of it.
Not at all.
It was better than I thought it would be.. but still. I guess they needed to include Taker on this list, and since it was his only match of 2011… oh well.
The overall list isn’t too bad. I think the SD ladder match from MitB coulda been higher up. No Barrett match should be on this list period. I’m shocked that Morrison made it as often as he did. He was ME & then splat… And to see him fall so fast, you’d think his last name was Hardy.

Absolutely.
No Barrett match should be on this list period.
I don’t hate the guy at all but I tend not to get excited when he wrestles.

He seems to get a lot of hate around here
but I don’t get the hate. He’s one of the few guys that can get some legitimate heel heat on him and he’s a good wrestler. His match at TLC was probably one of his best he’s had so far in the WWE and I have no problem with it being a top 25 match. I wasn’t much of a fan of Barret’s before, but his feud with Orton has turned me into a fan.
Me
It was a slow match where nothing particularly impressive happened. The only thing that stands out is that one moment where HHH did the tombstone, and stole Undertaker’s taunt pin- I thought that that was it. Outside of that, though, it was a pretty bad match- again, the wrestling was slow (not that I don’t see why- with two old dudes, you gotta pace it), nothing particularly exciting happened other than one or two spots out of a half hour match, and the ending was abrupt.

Some of the matches on this list actually sucked, while others are rated way too low.

I agree with about half of it.
Nice to see Christian making the top ten twice. He made those matches with Orton great.
Cool to see that Rey is on that list often even though he’s been injured for a third of the year. Rey is still one of the best workers in the company today.
I would have put Punk vs. Cena over HHH vs. Taker but that’s just nitpicking on my part.
Thanks for putting this all on one page.

Triple H vs Nash
I really enjoyed that match. I would have rated it pretty high. I think one key thing that helped my enjoyment was that I had no idea who would win. I talked myself into thinking Nash would win. I figured he would then move onto face Punk, since Punk didn’t have any big name challengers at that moment. Yes, it was slow, but it was really physical and something about it had me on the edge of my seat for most of the bout. That means a lot in my book since most matches don’t have that effect on me.

It was a hell of a ladder match
Those 2 guys were beating the living hell out of each other and it wasn’t just a spot fest. It was definitely a really fun match, and I think I might have honestly enjoyed it more than HHH-Taker
Plus the ending was fantastic. For pure entertainment and not technical stuff, Triple H vs Nash would be a serious contender for my match of the year.

I do sort of wish that Triple H had given him a 2nd pedigree before the sledge hammer shot
The crowd wanted it so badly.
Can't agree with number one

I can't imagine
there’s a single unbiased party who would say HHH/Taker was better than Punk/Cena
Beware my tiny electric fury.
HHH and Taker was on a bigger stage. Had Punk/Cena been at,mania it gets the nod. Honestly, ppl can’t keep shitting on how bad a worker Cena is then get mad about a match he was in getting overlooked. If punk/

I think part of it, too, is that people tend to forget Punk vs. Cena
was wrought with botches. They screwed up no less than 4 times during that match but the crowd was so hot it didn’t really matter.

Completely agree
Their SummerSlam match was super! I’m not sure why it didn’t make the list but it was technically better than mitb but with less heat.

Cool that Tyson Kidd made the list. And that Orton/Christian was so high.

Yeah, super surprising that Kidd made the list.
Or anything from NXT, even.

In certain ways, Undertaker/HHH was better than Cena/Punk.
The technique was tighter, the stage was bigger, and the offense was more brutal; not to mention that the pops and historical significance were around the same level. Not to mention I’ve always been a huge fan of both Hunter and Undertaker, while Punk was never a guy I was big on, and I positively despise Cena.
I really can’t fault the WWE for picking that as their MOTY, even knowing the real reason it won.
I would choose Punk/Cena as MOTY even though the match itself had plenty of botches. As far as entertainment value goes, nothing had me more glued to the screen than that one. It is amazing what a great story and a super hot crowd can do for a match. Too bad there was no JR on commentary for this one.
I think Taker/HHH is second best. I wasn’t expecting much out of this one but it blew away my expectations. And yeah, unfortunately we know the real reason it won.
I like Barrett but his match with Orton doesn’t belong on the list. All of Orton’s matches with Christian were better than that one.
And The Rock’s match in the top ten is crazy, but expected. I’m kind of surprised they didn’t place it higher than eighth.
