WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view buys 20K lower than initially reported
Last week Geno wrote of the abysmal buyrate that last month's Survivor Series pay-per-view (PPV) had done. Not only was it headlined by WrestleMania 28 opponents The Rock and John Cena teaming up against the team of The Miz and R-Truth but it was also the first time "The Great One" had stepped inside the squared circle in a wrestling capacity since WrestleMania XX.
Cena plus The Rock plus the Survivor Series name should have equaled monster buyrates, right? I've double checked my math -- even triple checked -- and I keep coming up with that answer. So when it was reported that the event only managed a measly 280,000 buys --- 180,000 of those being from the United States -- I thought surely that someone at the PPV company forgot to carry a one or add a decimal. That number couldn't possibly be right.
Well, it wasn't. It was worse.
Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer said on his Dec. 24 radio show that the estimates of 180K domestic buys were a bit premature and inflated. The more recent figure drops the prediction by 20,000 buys to 160K. If you thought the old number would have Vince McMahon clenching his fists in anger, the new number is sure to have his loved ones -- and by that I mean Kevin Dunn -- making sure all the guns in the house are unloaded.
While the newer, lower number still outperformed last year's buyrate, it was only by 16,000. Apparently that's the amount of people who either A) wanted to see if The Rock still had it inside the ring -- he does -- or B) bought the laughable excuse as to why two men who had decided a year in advance that they would settle their beef at WrestleMania 28 would form a tag team.
And in case you forgot the excuse -- and I wouldn't blame you on not wanting to waste brainpower retaining that sort of information -- it was because the millions -- AND MILLIONS -- of The Rock's Twitter followers demanded it. No, they didn't. People who like "The Brahma Bull" enough to follow him on Twitter are exactly the type of fans who are responsible for the new anti-John Cena shirt selling out only days after it became available online.
They don't want to see The Rock teaming up with Cena, they want to see "Fruity Pebbles" on the receiving end of a smackdown on the corner of Know Your Role Boulevard and Jabroni Drive. It doesn't take The Genius to figure that one out but a team up is what we got and fans responded in kind by not tuning in.
It's simply another example of the writing team being creatively bankrupt. They had to get Johnson on the event so they did so in the most groan-inducing way possible. If things remain as they are, the WWE will continue to languish and fall further and further out of relevance. The Rock was supposed to solve all of the WWE's problems.
But a band-aid -- even a Great One -- can't help a hatchet wound.

It would be hilarious in a “WTF” fashion if Wrestlemania’s buyrates doesn’t perform as expected.

So basically, WWE has to keep bringing in elements from outside the company like celebrities and the likes considering that the Rock alone isn’t going to do it anymore. Otherwise, Wrestlemania would be in danger of lower-than-expected buyrates.

Isn't that Wrestlemania always has been?
The times when they aren’t bringing back a face from the past or celebrities, they have a marquee match-up like Michaels/Undertaker to guarantee interest. Look at how Wrestlemania has been done in recent times especially. You’ve had Floyd Mayweather vs. Big Show, Michaels vs. Undertaker twice, Michaels vs. Flair (for what should have been Flair’s true retirement), Trump vs. McMahon in a hair vs. hair battle, and Edge vs. Mick Foley. Also, up until this past year, you had Money In The Bank being a guarantee for an awesome ladder match, but then this past Wrestlemania also had Stone Cold and The Rock making appearances and the Snooki debacle.
Wrestlemania is always about putting the most interesting match-ups out there regardless of if they are on the current WWE roster.
Absolutely. You’ve got a great point. However, I would love to see if WWE can stand well on it’s own two legs without a crutch for a Wrestlemania ppv. They have done this before, so why can’t they do it again?

heh, I'd love to see it but not this year
They’ve screwed themselves over the past decade or so. Right now, they’re going down the right path with a lot of their talent, but you aren’t going to get huge PPV buy rates for a PPV that is no different from the other 8 or 9 and essentially is a glorified 3 hour episode of Raw. You’d basically be asking for people to buy this PPV because of Undertaker-Triple H.
I didn't think their first match was good
and I’m so not looking forward to another Triple H/Undertaker match. I’m not saying it can’t be good, but last year left a sour taste in my mouth. I know a lot of people dug it, though, so maybe it will be a big deal to some.
Yeah, I don't think it was that great either
but it was widely considered a great match by a lot of people and was considered the highlight of this past Wrestlemania. I’m not too excited about another match between the 2, but it will draw.
Its a 4hour long show, and a huge spectacle. It always has been, always will be.
I’d rather see the Shaq/Show match than some of the bottomfeeders of the company. Hell, I liked the Trump/Vince match, the Show/Mayweather. Its all about showman ship, seeing things we haven’t & never will again. That’s why people fork out the cash for this one single show. It’ll never be a pure wrestling exhibition, you want that.. well you missed it w/ Final Battle 2011. But that card was stacked & AWESOME

The problem wasn't the 2 teaming up
It was The Miz and R-Truth looking like idiots the whole time that made the problem. Back when Orton was with Rhodes and DiBiase in Legacy, they had a feud going on with Triple H. Rhodes and DiBiase vs. Triple H in a 2 on 1 match. They ended up winning that match and beating Triple H down. After the match, Triple H said something like how he was apparently too old for this type of stuff and that he needed help against the 2 of them. That’s when they brought back Shawn Michaels for their last DX run.
WWE looked to be going down a similar route with Cena realizing he needed help against The Awesome Truth, but then he goes on to beat them when they try to make a run in and Rock’s decision to unite with Cena was just dumb. It was a simple enough storyline that the WWE just screwed up big time.
Change is coming
and coming quickly after this. It has to at this point to save the fans that becoming disalusioned with the current product
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Curtis Martin, Willie Roaf, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer
"Back in my day we killed five hookers and thought nothing of it" Craig James
Uh oh.
So The Miz and R-Truth has a pretty good thing going for a bit there. They seemed over as heels and played off one another well. Then they were completely buried for weeks on end. Now they look like total chumps. You know what would be perfect? If they were blamed for this.

I wonder...
How low do the buy rates have to go before WWE starts cutting shows? PPVs have lost their meaning for a long time now.
