On this date in WCW history: Hollywood Hogan gets head for the holidays
On December 22, 1997, Hollywood Hogan ended the Monday Nitro go-home show for World Championship Wrestling's (WCW) Starrcade pay-per-view (PPV) by cutting a promo on Sting with Eric Bischoff by his side.
The Hulkster was set to defend his WCW World Heavyweight Championship just six days later against Stinger, but had his promo interrupted by a random jobber crew member who was delivering to him a Christmas present. In a fairly corny skit, Hollywood thinks Bischoff hooked him up, despite repeated claims to the contrary.
Meanwhile, Bret Hart coasts to the ring in a convertible limo to smile and adjust his leather jacket.
Hogan opens up the gift and it's a severed head. His severed head, to be exact. He screams and shakes uncontrollably in fear, which prompts Sting to zip-line down to the ring as the show goes off the air.
Cliffhanger!
Watch it all go down, after the jump.
Alright Cagesiders, it's kinda hard to deny watching Stinger zip down to the ring was a little badass, but did Hogan's "head" games ruin the ending?

In just a few sentences Hogan did what almost no one in today’s wrestling world can do. He sold the PPV.. he did the key things… he mentioned his opponent, he talked about what was going to happen in the match to said opponent, and he gave the name & date of the PPV. Its all so simple. It is an easy formula… and no one does it. I can listen to an episode of Raw, and never know when the damn PPV is going down. That might be a bit of an exaggeration.. your job is to sell PPV’s.. the bigger the show goes off, the more cashola you get.. and thus the fast you make it to the top of the ranks. Cena is by far & away the best. There are others who do decent jobs.. Cena’s problem is that no one wants to pay to see him win again.. and when he talks about whipping ass.. he does it in a nice guy way.. like you almost can’t take him seriously. Really, who goes into a fight all smiles & not hyped up.

That’s a really great point
It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.

The build to Starcade was incredible
It was a match a year and a half in the making and drew nearly two million buys. what happened that night with the fast count that wasn’t sent WCW into a downward spiral.
