That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Hulk Hogan takes on The Rock at WrestleMania X8
Forgive the lateness of today's installment of 'That was awesome!' but I'm currently on vacation in Los Angeles, visiting some friends and soaking in some California sun.
I even made the trek down to Venice Beach and contrary to popular belief, Hulk Hogan and Sting AREN'T just hanging out pumping iron.
Color me disappointed.
You know what didn't disappoint? The "Icon vs. Icon" match-up between the "Hulkster" and The Rock at WrestleMania X8 -- 18 for everyone who isn't an edgy, hip youngster drinking energy drinks and watching MTV.
The match itself was ... well, my mama raised me that if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. As a writer for Cageside, I don't usually adhere to this advice but I'm riding on sweet ocean breeze and whatever was in that hypodermic needle that stuck me in the foot on the beach. Just playin', Venice Beach is pretty clean.
But yeah, the match was meh but the staredown ... the staredown was EPIC.
Check it out.
That staredown has got to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen inside the ring. It was like the two men who had both -- countless times -- sold 'em out and sent some home were taken aback by how much energy was inside the arena.
I don't know if we'll ever get a moment like this again.

When I went and hung out at Venice Beach there were like 2 people working out at Muscle Beach and they were like 65.
Still had a fun time watching all the weirdos though.

Did Hogan walk out to this music, or did the WWE change it for the web clip?

He came out to the nWo theme, which is actually a couple of Jimi Hendrix riffs, so I’m thinking it was a licensing issue. They probably have the rights to play it at events/shows, but not distribute it on DVD where this might have been ripped from.
This is just me piecing together clues though, but it seems most likely.
As one who was there
(and a huge mark for the Rock) my only real memory of this match was the sense of frantic despair when 68,000 people inexplicably (to me, at least) decided to cheer for Hogan. As the match progressed I really felt that they were going to call an audible and give Hogan a face turn and the victory and collectively drag us back into 1985.
It’s impossible to describe the power of the emotions in the building during the match, and for something that we all knew was scripted and prearranged. I needed a cigarette after the match- and I don’t even smoke.
Who wants to save the world? That's what misers do...
The only dissapointing thing about that match was the ending, it was clear going into the weekend that the fans were going to root for Hogan yet we got a typical WWE finish. Then the WWE made yet another idiotic move by turning Hogan face and destroying the NWO making things worse. But it’s still a great moment and while the match itself wasn’t great it was carried by a red hot crowd, Cena better be ready because this is what’s going to happen to him at WM only worse.
