On this date in WWE history: Kane sets MVP on fire at Armageddon

Flame on!

On December 17, 2006, Kane and Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) didn't just jerk the curtain to open WWE's Armageddon pay-per-view, they set the damn thing on fire.

Literally.

The dangerous but visually epic "Inferno Match" made its return for the first time in over seven years and it didn't disappoint. MVP ended up losing, well, because "The Big Red Machine" set him on fire.

See how it all went down, after the jump.

Some interesting WWE/F Inferno match trivia from the Pro Wrestling Wiki:

  • Kane has competed in every Inferno match to date, with a win-loss record of 1-3.
  • Kane competed in the first Inferno match on his birthday, April 26 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
  • Armageddon 2006 was the first Inferno match to occur after Kane had been unmasked.
  • Every Inferno Match has ended with the losing wrestler being set on fire, outside the ring. This is so that the wrestler can quickly escape to the back to be extinguished.

How about it Cagesiders, anyone think the return of Kane will bring about the return of the Inferno match?

Sure why not?

Only been used 4 times, it seems to be “Kane’s Match” much like Casket Match was Undertaker’s. The endings are usually typically meh when they get set on fire, but I think it looks awesome when the flames leap up during a power move.

JBL's commentary sells this match soooo much.

That being said, given the current PG era, I doubt the Inferno Match will make a comeback in any form except for the videogame (which uses it in an interesting way, btw, with an on-screen thermometer showing how the fire gets hotter with more moves).

Time to spread a little chaos...

Say what you will about Kane's wrestling ability, but I was transfixed by this match.

I’m not a pyro by any means, but my eyes were glued to this match from beginning to end. Just being in that ring had to be very uncomfortable for both wrestlers; the tension was palpable. Definitely a gimmick match I’d like to see again.
