WWE Raw results and reactions from the 2011 Slammy Awards on Dec. 12 in Virginia

Photo via WWE.com

WWE Monday Night Raw last night (Dec. 12, 2011) emanated from the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia, and featured a three hour broadcast thanks to this years Slammy Awards.

The entire show was gimmicked to work around the awards, which resulted in three mostly wasted hours with little wrestling and a lot of talking mixed with video packages.

Let's get to some reactions from the show:

  • The first hour of a three hour broadcast is a throwaway, which is why we ended up with Jim Ross and Michael Cole in a "rap off" spurned on by Booker T, because, you know, that's what he likes. The segment was funny in a sad way but quickly became uncomfortably bad when Ross forgot his lines and made that horrible attempt at a spin-a-rooni. The idea wasn't so bad but the execution was god awful.
  • What was the point of having Big Show vs. Wade Barrett? The match lasted all of a minute and a half and it resulted in a bullsh*t disqualification that didn't help anyone and didn't sell the pay-per-view they're supposed to be building towards this Sunday night. The idea behind it was fine, with Barrett giving the proper set up beforehand, but playing the match out that way was just a waste of time.
  • The fans at the Scope last night couldn't have cared any less about the Road Dogg Jesse James. That did two things to me. 1. I felt sad that these people couldn't be bothered to participate in one of the easiest mark entrance songs ever and 2. I felt really old, despite still being relatively young. The sad fact? That crowd probably didn't know who Road Dogg is or ever was.
  • CM Punk was stumbling over his lines tonight but no one seemed to notice or care. Not that I do, but he seemed off for some reason. Could be the silly segment he did with a blow up doll. The references to the Dynamic Dudes need to stop, too. If the crowd doesn't know who Road Dogg is, they sure as hell aren't going to know anything about any Dynamic Dude. Plus, it's grown tired. Find some new material, please.
  • The Bella Twins dresses? Win. Pure win.
  • Triple H returning to almost no reaction wasn't much of a shock. What was more shocking to me was his near total and complete inability to make me care in any way, shape or form about his match against Kevin Nash on Sunday. I might dump on "The Game" for being a ruthless political player but he's usually money on the microphone and he's still solid in the ring. Last night, he cut a really vanilla promo that made me wish the program was already over. That ladder match is going to be a disaster of epic proportions.

Thoughts on the rest of the show after the jump.

Star-divide

  • The idea behind awarding a Slammy to whoever trended during a match is quite possibly the stupidest thing anyone has ever done in pro wrestling. That said, I really enjoyed Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler working together. Daniel Bryan was great too but Zack Ryder's presence brought the match down a notch. He's got a good following but he can't keep up with a lot of these guys.
  • Christian was awesome in the short time he got to be on TV. This injury will turn out to be a good thing for him, as his character was growing stale and his story repetitive. Yeah, he mostly pushed the same lines last night but he did so with a vigor we weren't getting before. Let's hope that's the guy who returns when he's healthy.
  • I really don't like how Randy Orton is being made to look like such a dork each week with these silly little distractions from Barrett that are costing him matches. This time Orton wasn't counted out and made to look like a complete donk, he just cost CM Punk a match. I understand that Barrett should be the guy looking the strongest going into the pay-per-view but he doesn't look strong with these small run-ins and they make Orton look bad. That's bad booking, you guys.
  • Sheamus vs. Jinder Mahal was a classic example of "make sure this guy gets on television, no matter what has to be done, even a silly squash that no one will understand the reasons behind because none are needed, because this guy just needs to get on TV." What sucks is I feel like I'm the only one on Earth who thinks Mahal could be a strong heel if they just gave him a big enough push. Anyone else think that or am I totally alone?
  • The Cena vs. Mark Henry match was actually okay before Kane came out to wreck shop. I don't get why he chokeslammed Cena, other than the fact that he's a monster again, but I loved the look on Henry's face when he realized it was Kane and bailed out. It's small things like that that make me mark out for Henry.
  • Kane's new look is awesome.

I won't judge this show too harshly because, again, they simply worked everything around the Slammy Awards. As a go-home show to a pay-per-view, it was terrible but it was hard not to mark out when Kane made his return. The three hours before it get a D but the "Big Red Monster Machine" returning gets an A+ from me. Love the new look.

That's enough from me, Cagesiders. Now it's your turn to sound off with all your thoughts on the show last night.

Just watched the Cena/Henry match. Two things…

1. “Come awn Mr USA!” Sorry, Asterisk. Henry’s great at what he does.

2. Cena was forever going for the AA and collapsing under Henry’s weight. That, considering his image as, well, Mr USA made him look weaker than normal. Which, frankly, is good.

As harsh as I usually am on your reviews

This was spot on. I actually thought the exact same thing about Christian when I saw him. I think a lot of wrestlers should take a month vacation here and there, just to help the entire roster. There’s simply too many people to have everybody constantly fighting for airtime. Relatedly, Jinder could be a decent heel, but 2/3’s of the roster is already heel. Who could he legit fued with? Just too many damn bodies.

Mahal actually separates himself from the roster. Hell, the small thing of having a dazzled out robe helps. He actually invests in his character. So many are in just tshirts or their wrestling gear. I think Jinder should get a good push.. more than Ryder deserves & lets see what he’s got.

Thought the same thing. When “OH YOU DIDN’T KNOW” actually turns in to “Oh, you don’t know” it makes you feel old.

I did too

I laughed and said “oh you didn’t know!” My girlfriend was in the room (newer fan of WWE) and asked who that was, I went on to explain him, the New Age Outlaws, D-X…I could see her boredom grow quickly, so I just stopped. :\

OHYOUDIDNTKNOW

started trending on Twitter right after he showed up, except it looked like it ended up being co-opted for something more generic – but i have to imagine the timing wasn’t just a coincidence.

was i the only person hoping that Lita was going to get back in the ring last night? she looked fantastic.

No, I was hoping for a tag match with Lita & K2.

Honestly not that surprising. The same thing happened to Brian Christopher a couple months ago. People just don’t care about a midcard wrestler they haven’t seen in a decade suddenly showing up for no reason unless they’re diehard, obsessive fans.

To me, the saddest part is the fact that WWE’s so desperate for a reaction of any kind that they’ll completely scrape the nostalgia barrel, but they still refuse to give a chance for a new guy at becoming a main event player unless said fresh face’s reactions get so loud that they have no choice but to push them (i.e. Jeff Hardy, CM Punk).

by *Asterisk* on Dec 13, 2011 10:26 AM EST reply actions

Not even close.

Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and, as much as I hate to admit it, Chyna, were all more over and more important to the cards than the New Age Outlaws.

The Outlaws had an entrance everybody popped for, but the crowd died every time it came down to an Outlaws match. Most of the merch DX sold was as a result of the three people I mentioned above, and had almost nothing to do with the outlaws. Even if you want to count DX as a whole for being over, the entirety of DX was less over than Steve Austin, Undertaker, The Rock, Mick Foley, and Mr. McMahon.

There’s no reason to expect a fan in 2011 to care about a tertiary player from a decade ago who hasn’t been seen on WWE TV in several presidential administrations.

by *Asterisk* on Dec 13, 2011 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

A copied article from WWF.com with no date on it doesn’t change the fact that no ratings, buyrates, memorable feuds, or memorable matches were ever generated by the Outlaws.

It’s not that Road Dogg didn’t have talent, Road Dogg was actually serviceable in the ring and really good on the mic, its just ridiculous to expect that all but the most diehard of WWE fans from that era would remember these guys.

Billy Gunn, however, was always awful at everything, and the primary reason why the Outlaws never had a good match.

It's not that the audience doesn't remember or care. It's been too long!

The NAO were at their peak in 1997/1998. The fifteen year olds in attendance can’t know about it since they were barely out of their mother’s wombs. Same principle for 20 year olds.

On top of that, of the audience that was watching in 97/98, very few remain today. But, if you were there then and are present now, you know your ass better call somebodaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy!!!!

And he still danced all the way down to the ring. Sad sight.

The first hour was pretty horrible

The last two hours were better. The last ten minutes were amazing.

The best parts of the show were Ted Dibiosi, Road Dogg, the Bellas, the four-way match, and Kane’s return. Overall, I wish there was more wrestling. I’d give the show a B- with Kane’s return, and a C- if he didn’t return.

Noticeably no one cared about Road Dogg, but true fans marked out.

Henry’s monster heel image is getting belittled by Kane?

Are you serious, Geno?

Punk’s segment last night was hilarious! The mannequin prop, the tribute video package, and the “You like me. You really really like me” in Laurinaitis’s voice were all money.

it was funny

but I’ve been a wrestling fan for 20 plus years and I barely know anything about the Dynamic Dudes, why do they think that 13, 14 year olds that they are catering to are going to get these references? It’s time to move on to something else.

Maslow's theory of higher needs does not apply to Patrick Willis. He only has two needs: tackling people and finding people to tackle.

Cena did well last night

He came out and delivered an entertaining promo at the The Rock’s expense and followed it up by making Henry look strong and taking Henry’s finisher before Kane’s triumphant return.
