That was awesome! (clap clap clapclapclap): Bret Hart outwrestles 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin at Survivor Series 1996

Photo by Steve Haag/Gallo Images/Getty Images

After Bret Hart lost the WWE Championship to Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XII, he took some time off to film some cowpoke TV show or something. A remake of Lonesome Dove, I believe is what kept Hart away from the squared circle.

Leading up to his return, the WWE decided that it should be the villainous "Stone Cold" Steve Austin that would end up goading him back into the ring. The quickly becoming popular anti-hero made fun of Hart's "pink and black tights" and swore that if he ever got "The Hitman" to wrestle him, the former Ted DiBiase protege would defeat the Canadian hero.

He got his wish at Survivor Series 1996 in one of the best matches I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Even though the storyline that played out in their WrestleMania 13 match had more impact, I felt the wrestling itself in this match was better.

Take a look at the final minutes of this match and in particular the ending which I am a huge fan of.

Star-divide

I always loved the ending to this match. Bret Hart busted it out on "Rowdy" Roddy Piper at WrestleMania VIII but I didn't watch that event until LONG after I saw this because well, it's WrestleMania VIII and who wants to see that?

This was back when Austin could still utilize his underrated technical skills but Hart proved that no matter how good "Stone Cold" was in the grappling department, the Dungeon graduate is a little better.

Awesome match, Hart sold that stunner beautifully,

I hate when people oversell that stunner

It's a pity Austin broke his neck.

Austin was flawless when his injuries weren’t completely totaling his body.

I feel like that's another thing Bret doesn't get credit for

From this match, to the way he served as the perfect foil in the coming months, he really played a big role in helping propel Austin to super-duper-duper stardom.

I think everyone gives Bret a ton of credit for helping Austin get over

Their Mania 13 match has long been heralded as has their feud overall. After Montreal, fans wanted Vince dead and Austin was the perfect one to kill him. It was so well orchestrated, the transferance of Bret Harts heel heat to Vince, that I’ve always wondered about Montreal.

If

Bret’s time “down south” had gone better I would agree, but it was such a disaster that I can’t see Bret agreeing to it for any amount of money.
To me Montreal always seemed more like a ritual sacrafice (pardon the hyperbole)- a bloodletting that cleared the way for the Attitude Era and set up storylines and motivation for Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, and the linchpin “Mr.McMahon” character for years… as well as a subconscious inspiration for the Undertaker-Kane storyline.
Vince milked the screwjob for years, from all angles. No wonder he so willingly absorbed a blackened eye.

Love that match to me it’s the best of all the Bret-Austin matches because first it was MSG and second Hart made Austin look like a million bucks by selling like the a mofo the whole match. Even though Austin lost the match in actuality he gained a ton of credibility and became a legit ME after this and you didn’t need stupid angles or any bs just a great wrestling match by 2 pro’s.
