On this date in WCW history: Eric Bischoff announced Bret Hart as the newest member of the nWo
And then proceeded to butcher the Canadian national anthem.
On November 10, 1997, Eric Bischoff told a national audience on Monday Nitro that he had signed Bret Hart, who would debut as the newest member of the nWo.
Keep in mind, this was before most of us were running wild on the world wide web, so it was difficult to separate fact from fiction at the time. Especially since it came just one day after the Montreal Screwjob.
Because of his no-compete clause, "The Hitman" wouldn't be seen until December and was pushed as a face in response to the fan support he'd received from his falling out with the WWF.
nW-no.
How about it Cagesiders, anyone remember buying what Bisch was selling?

The nWo was so awful by this point...
It’s scary to think how revolutionary the nWo was at its inception and how stale and boring it was just a little over a year later. Too many people. Too many marginal talents. Too many run-ins and shitty finishes. Toss in the fact that they only ever built up one legitimate challenger to the nWo in Sting and then they pissed that away with the botched finish at Starrcade when they didn’t let Stinger go over clean.
It’s too bad Bischoff had nothing else in his arsenal or WCW might still be alive and kicking today.
As far as Bret coming over, I wasn’t shocked after the way Survivor Series ended. When he did finally show up though, it seemed like his heart (no pun intended) was never really in it. Interviews say he could never really get over Montreal and then Owen died the next spring and it only makes sense that he was never the same performer he was in the WWF.
I remember it being the worst version of O Canada I’ve ever heard.
