WWE: Kevin Nash still expects a match against CM Punk

Photo

Kevin Nash has been a very busy man as of late.

Aside from taking time out of professional wrestling to continue his movie career, he recently main evented the AWE "Legends of Wrestling" show this past Saturday night (Oct. 15). The show was largely labeled a disaster of epic proportions, with many of the "legends" who were advertised for the event skipping out and never bothering to show up.

Nash's match was also widely panned as a complete waste of time, though I can neither confirm nor deny this claim, as I did the same as most of the "legends" and skipped out on the show.

His biggest claim to fame, though, at least recently, was his big program in WWE with CM Punk.

Once Triple H took over as on-screen COO (and has been gaining more and more pull within the company itself), Nash made his big return at SummerSlam to cost Punk the WWE championship and subsequently feuded with him over the course of the next month.

During the feud, one thing became incredibly clear -- Punk made Nash look horrible night in and night out. Naturally, the fans chocked this up to how good "The Straight Edge Superstar" has become but "Big Sexy" told the Chad Dukes Wrestling Show that he knew what his job was when he was asked back and it wasn't to upstage anybody:

"I understood what my job was. Going in, my job wasn't to bury a babyface and come across more witty than he was or anything else. That wasn't what I was brought in to do. The old Kevin Nash would have, at anybody's cost, gotten over. As you get older and your best friend is very much in charge of the day-to-day process and he looks at you and asks you to do something, it's like, wow, they've really got me hog-tied on this one."

It's good to hear that Nash knew the deal going in and didn't bother to flip the script in the middle of the program. That's likely because he couldn't even if he wanted to, seeing as Punk is a much bigger stage at this stage in their respective careers.

Then again, it's entirely possible that Nash is simply saving face here. The nature of each one of the dueling promos was that both guys got a long leash and were allowed to say basically whatever they wanted. Punk went the full nine with it while the best Nash could come up with was his cutdown on Punk's size, saying he looks "like a short order cook from Waffle House."

The program ended unceremoniously when Nash was fired by Triple H so he could go off to make his movie and get medical clearance to wrestle, something he couldn't do the first time he came back. But now that all his obligations have been met, should we expect to see Nash vs. Punk at some point in the future? And can "Big Daddy Cool's" body hold up?

Here's what he said when asked:

Star-divide

"Absolutely ... I'm like 280-pounds right now. I'm in the best shape of my life. My knees feel better than they have because I've basically taken a 30-pound rucksack off. You know, I set the bar so low for myself as far as workrate anyway, so yeah, it's really not that hard. Another thing I was saying, CM Punk has on the back of his t-shirt "Best in the World" -- I say to myself and I said to a couple other people, the shirt says he's "Best in the World," he's going to have to prove it if he's going to have to drag my 52-year-old carcass through 14 minutes of a match. Because I know one thing for sure, there's a buddy of mine that's probably about 45-years-old sitting on a couch in San Antonio right now that could pop off his couch and do it."

I love the subtle dig at Punk in saying he's not the "Best in the World" as he claims unless he can get a good match out of Nash, who is damn near helpless in the ring anymore at his age and in his physical condition.

Even better was the inclusion of Shawn Michaels in saying that even at 45-years-old, he could do it. Which is true.

Sure, he may say he's feeling better than ever and that may be so. But we all watched him struggle to get down to the ring and there was more than one instance in which his promos prompted speculation that he was pilled up on live TV.

That said, I'm a fan of Nash and think he brings plenty to the table if he's used right. I'm not sure how I feel about a potential match against Punk at some point down the road but it will make sense no matter what they do with it and I am curious to see if Punk can do enough with him to make it worthwhile.

My guess? Yes, he can.

Any Cagesiders out there grimacing at the thought of another Kevin Nash return? Or would you like to see him back and in another program with Punk?

Tough Call...

The problem is that Nash is still so far out of touch with the modern fanbase and vice versa. They tried to do the videos on the website and the backstory stuff to get the new WWE fans caught up to speed, but then he never got to deliver in the ring.

To make it worthwhile, they’d need to build him up legit for awhile, otherwise no one in their right mind takes a 50+ year old guy with dead knees seriously against Punk, size be damned. Sure, he’s 7 feet tall and jacked, but if he couldn’t catch Punk, how could he hurt him?

They’d need to give him the Sheamus push and have him destroy a bunch of people before anyone takes him seriously against Punk in his prime.

I think Nash contributed a lot to the business, but at this stage, it’d have to be the perfect program for me to get behind him doing anything major…otherwise it’ll feel as awkward and out of place as his last mini-run at the end of the summer was.

Great comment.

I agree.

I guess it would be interesting to see if Punk could carry him through something watchable, but I don’t want to sit through the buildup. That comment about Michaels is pretty ridiculous, as their natural chemistry would have a lot to down with Shawn being able to carry him.

He was light the entire interview

so none of this was said as a way to overly poke at Punk.

Oh, I’m not saying it was necessarily a shot at Punk, I just think he’s smart enough about the business to realize that Michaels would have a natural advantage in getting a match out of him just because of the chemistry they have.
