On this date in Stampede Wrestling history: Stu Hart passes on to 'The Dungeon' in the sky

On October 16, 2003, pro wrestling's greatest sire, Stu Hart, passed away at the age of 88. In addition to being the father of WWF superstars Bret and Owen Hart, he was also the founder of the infamous "Dungeon."

Known as "The Dungeon," Stu Hart's makeshift gym has become the stuff of wrestling lore. Little more than some old, thin mats surrounded by cracked wood paneling and rusted barbells, "The Dungeon" was the rigorous training ground of future ring legends like "Superstar" Billy Graham, Brian Pillman and The British Bulldogs. A strict mentor, the barrel-chested Stu delighted in twisting his students to their physical limits — a skill he had learned decades earlier in the dingy gyms of Saskatoon.

In addition to training future world champions Chris Jericho, Edge, Christian, Mark Henry, and Chris Benoit, Hart also founded Stampede Wrestling and was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
