A Look at the Feud Between Rampage Jackson and James Toney

In early December of last year, on an episode of HDNet's Inside MMA, former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson mentioned being interested in a fight with James Toney.  Not long after, James Toney fired back with the following at FightHype:

"The only thing that the Fake Mr. T has to do is sign the contract.  Rampage is a decent club fighter and if he thinks his club fighting style can match my skills, then he is crazy as hell,"

"Machida almost knocked him out, so what do you think I would do to him."

"Rampage is a black redneck.  He better stick to hanging with them white boys and keep my name out of his mouth.  I ain't hard to find; sign the contract!"

It's no mystery why James Toney jumped on the chance to start beefing with a big name in the UFC like Rampage.  Toney stepped into the UFC knowing that it would get him a couple more paydays before he's completely shot (if he's not already).  Toney was the biggest winner after his fight with Randy Couture, and he's looking to score again.  Dana White does not, and should not want any part of Toney in the UFC ...but Rampage has no problem with it, and has issued a video reply, generating a little bit of hype for a potential fight with the boxer.

After the jump, Toney's reply to the above video, and my final comments on a potential Rampage/Toney match up.

Yet again, James Toney spoke with FightHype (I am convinced these guys are the best transcribers on the planet):

"I saw the little video. It's comical; that motherf--ker sound like Lady Gaga in that video. He is a joke. If he really want to do it, all he gotta do is call me. He knows my number; he got it,"

"Don't act brand new motherf--ker. He talking about he gonna do this and do that. He went to Detroit and he barely survived; he f-ck with me he ain't coming out alive. I promise you that. He says I'm barking up the wrong tree? Motherf-cker, I will piss on your tree."

"This n-gga was trying to play some hard music in the background like he's a gangsta. It sounded like some Country Western shit to me. I hang with real gangstas. To be a gangsta, you gotta have some real gangstas behind you. What he got? He got the Klu Klux Klan behind him. I'm the peoples champ and I give them what they want,"

If James Toney and Rampage Jackson continue to go back and forth, I feel like Dana White just may make the fight happen.  I don't want to see Toney back in MMA, but between these two, they just may be able to generate enough interest to force White to make the fight happen.  Toney looked as if he hardly prepared to fight going into the match with Couture, and I doubt the idea that Jackson will stand with him (he wouldn't) is enough to get Toney interested enough to actually put in some effort this time around.

Still..."Motherf-cker, I will piss on your tree," is a classic line.  I hope that Rampage moves forward with his career rather than taking a detour by fighting "Phony" James Toney, but it would be a quick payday for Rampage.  A win is a win, and the more fans watching, the bigger the win for Rampage's brand.  We'll keep an eye on the situation, but I suspect Dana White will shoot down the idea the first time a reporter brings it up.
