From the press release:

The opportunity to watch two live prelim fights for free from UFC® Fight For The Troops 2 is now only a click away. The Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced today that fans will have the ability to watch two exciting UFC contests on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT by simply clicking the "Like" button on the official UFC Facebook page.

By liking Facebook.com/UFC, fans will gain access to a live stream of the lightweight battle between Cody McKenzie (12-0) of The Ultimate Fighter®and veteran Yves Edwards (39-16-1), as well as a pivotal welterweight clash pitting TUF alum DaMarques Johnson (16-8) against Mike "The Joker" Guymon (13-4-1). Fans that do not have a Facebook account are encouraged to sign up at www.facebook.com.

"I'm always looking for ways to give fans fights for free and this is just another example of that," UFC President Dana White said. "Facebook is such a great tool for people to stay connected and we're excited to put two live fights on our UFC page for free."

Yet again the UFC is demonstrating wisdom in dealing with social media, as seen prior to this with Twitter and YouTube.  Facebook may turn out to be the biggest success of all the UFC's online endeavors, and I'm eager to see how many new "likes" the UFC gets on Facebook out of this.  The UFC continues to set the standard in mixed martial arts, and are also pioneering sports in social media.

Speaking of social media, Cageside Seats is on Facebook and Twitter, gives us a "like" and follow us!

I saw this on BE and Luke Thomas' commentary

And it got me thinking that as it’s a currently free service, and there’s intention to have Pay per View content through facebook at some point, maybe this is what Ring of Honor needs to do now that they’re not on HDNet.

No harm in doing a trial run and if it turns out well (they really have to drive the online marketing) they can go to advertisers and say “This is how many people watched the last event, we can include advertising / sponsorship as part of the next live broadcast”.

Does anyone remember Pro Elite? They are the MMA social media pioneers

They were originally designed as a social networking site for fighters/meatheads and would stream events. I remember spending a long saturday watching a Cage Rage event. It was good times.

They were the guys that started the MMA social networking trend. In fact, i’m surprised it took the UFC this long to incorporate social networking into their marketing.
Proelite ftw.

Pro Elite also completely over spent in the running of that site

or ‘social network’ if you want. Chuck Liddell also endorses an MMA based social network site called MMA Jacked. It’s still up but … yeah, I don’t use it either.

Their parent company did go overboard and they’re not operational. But they should be credited with being early adopters to attempt to merge streaming and networking.
