WWE Royal Rumble match to see major change this year

I wish that the Royal Rumble ads were still like this.

WWE has announced a major change for the Royal Rumble match in 13 days.  The progressive entry battle royal, which has consisted of 30 wrestlers since its pay per view debut in 1989 (the dry run on a house show and the first Rumble as a USA Network special in 1988 had 20 wrestlers), will now feature 40 wrestlers entering the match "every 90 seconds" (in reality, it's usually less, but can be more depending on when the right moment comes along).

For generating hype, it's a good idea, but the excitement of the match could suffer as a result.  It could be hurt in two different ways:

  1. The ring becomes too overloaded too often, with most of the wrestlers just hanging on the ropes.
  2. Time has to be shaved too much and nothing gets enough room to develop.

The former has happened too often in recent years.  Part of what makes the Rumble great is that you can keep the ring relatively clear, making it a much better, more focused match than a traditional battle royal.  In a standard battle royal, the action of a more traditional match cannot be done either logically or safely until the late stages of the match when most of the participants are gone.

The latter comes to mind thanks to the 1995 Royal Rumble.  With the gap between entrances offically being "two minutes" through 1993, they were changed to "ninety seconds" in 1994, and the match still went fine.  In 1995, as an experiment, the gap was shortened to "one minute," with the idea that it would be "the most exciting Royal Rumble match ever."  Running just under 39 minutes, the match was too cramped.  It wasn't bad, but if not for the finish (Shawn Michaels seemingly being eliminated by Davey Boy Smith but only letting one foot touch the floor before getting back in the ring and eliminating Smith to win), nobody would remember anything about the match.  They went back to longer gaps in 1996.  I can't find anything with the "official" times, just the real ones since the gaps were always worked.  As best I can tell, '96-'99 was "two minutes," '00 was "ninety seconds," '01-'02 were "two minutes," and everything since has been "ninety seconds."  With 40 wrestlers in the match this year, the length should be close to the older "two minute" Rumbles.

Hopefully, Pat Patterson will be a genius in laying out the match and everything will go fine.

I think it’s good that 10 more guys will get a payday, but…40’s too much of a clusterfuck. They’re gonna use the extra 10 to pop the crowd with one-night comebacks or old gimmicks. It does nothing for me, personally.

there must be something wrong with it

Just so I’m sure, that’s Earthquake on the top left, isn’t it?

I just hope they give it to a big guy. This match always made my suspension of disbelief as a kid. I mean, I had no problem believing that opening the Undertaker’s urn completely explained his loss to Yokozuna in the casket match (not to mention his fucking ascent above the Titantron), but dudes that never went over the top rope in actual matches getting eliminated? Fuck that noise.

Yep, that's Earthquake...

The one that has me stumped in the guy beside him. Is that the Texas Tornado/Kerry von Erich?

S

Sid Justice maybe

by Phildo on Jan 18, 2011 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

Could be

I don’t remember Sid ever having long blue tights though. but I do remember a sleeveless denim jacket of sorts.

I thought that was a denim vest, but I can’t be sure from the picture.

And to be honest the only image of sid that can actually pop into my head this far removed is his excellent top rope big boot.

Quick eliminations is the only way it works

I’m guessing about half have been picked to get a pop, get some offense in, maybe hit a trademark move and then get eliminated just as quickly themselves.

By the way, that is one mutant looking Cobra in that picture. Pretty sure they don’t wrap around like that since they’re not constrictors.

Trust me to notice that.

They had to accommodate all the Nexus franchises

Have to agree with Bix two of my favourite Rumble moments happened with just two guys in it:

1992 When Roddy Piper ran out with Ric Flair begging off

1997 Austin’s face when Bret Hart’s music played

Not Jackson Andrews thats for sure

Ric'd!!!

for the rumble picture alone. Awesome stuff.

I think 40 participants won’t hurt the Rumble at all. They’ll figure out a way to clear people out at the right time. That’s what Kane and Big Show are for.

I gotta say,

I like that the “roster” was expanded. Not that I think any of these guys have any shot of winning anything, but it’s nice to see the “Superstars B-Listers” in important matches once and a while. Watching older Royal Rumbles, I love seeing guys like that, and being, “Oh, man! I remember that guy!”

Someone already mentioned it above, but I’m betting the extra 10 spots are so they can do a ring-cleared Nexus vs NexTus face-off. Batista 2.0 vs Lashley 2.0.

I remember originally Andre was scheduled to be in the match (listen to the commentary during ’Taker’s Superstars debut match) but was obviously way too broken down by the time it rolled around. Would have been pretty incredible to see ’Taker and Andre sharing the ring (if it had happened, anyway).
