The Good

  • The Motor City Machine Guns vs. Generation Me -  This match was everything a pay-per-view opener should be. These four guys slowly worked the crowd into quite the frenzy. The transition chain wrestling early to high spots later on in the match was seamless. While I was disappointed to find out that London Brawling was off the card I must say that Generation Me more than filled the void. Hopefully the post match beat down administered by Max and Jeremy is the start of something big for the tandem. The Machine Guns have looked unstoppable lately but Alex Shelley's injured neck may be their undoing.

More after the jump!

Star-divide

  • AJ Styles vs. Tommy Dreamer - A total mismatch in styles but the "I Quit" stipulations made it work. AJ made Dreamer look like a million bucks despite the fact that he really isn't in the television champion's league. Dreamer's offense is nowhere near as polished as AJ's so he had to get by on sheer brutality. The crossface spots using wires and the kendo stick were absolutely brutal. The ghetto fork to the eye by AJ was even worse and the perfect way to end the match. It got over the fact that AJ, despite his boyish good looks and newfound chickenshit heel persona, is a tough S.O.B. when he has to be. While Dreamer will probably be nothing more than a bit player in the grand scheme of TNA he still looked like a credible threat. If this was a straight wrestling match it would have failed miserably but the two were able to use the stipulation to their advantage.
  • Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Hardy - Not even goofy TNA booking can deny the fact that this match was entertaining. If this match didn't have a 20 minute time limit and two five minute overtimes and just went straight through I could see it entering MOTY territory (though there were some botches that would ultimately keep it from winning). These two have worked each other a lot of the years and it's obvious that they have some chemistry with one another. The ankle lock spot to end the regulation period of the match was "awesome" as the TNA crowd would say. One thing that I have to say I didn't like about the match is the lack of finishers actually finishing the match. A top rope Angle Slam or a Swanton Bomb from top rope to the floor should be match enders but tonight it wasn't the case. I must say that I am impressed that Jeff's face paint stayed on as well as it did. He is definitely a master of makeup. Good for him. I can't believe that this wasn't the main event as I don't think there is anything that Pope and Anderson can do to top Angle and Hardy.
The Bad
  • Sabu vs. Douglas Williams - The clashing styles of these two wrestlers made this match a bit hard to watch. While the opening tag team match flowed and told a bit of a story this tilt kind of floundered. A lot of botches but I suppose that is to be expected when Sabu is involved. I'm not sure what he has done recently to earn a title shot but whatever. I still can't get over his baldness it just does not feel right.
  • Madison Rayne vs. Velvet Sky - I remember when the TNA Knockouts actually put on entertaining matches. Those days are long gone, however. Why this match made the pay-per-view is beyond me.
  • Abyss vs. Rhino - Bleh. Falls-count-anywhere matches that end in the ring kind of disappoint me. I understand the notion of wanting to have the crowd see the finish live rather than on a giant television screen but it still goes against the whole idea of the stipulation. The match itself wasn't anything special but neither are the wrestlers involved. Abyss is so stale these days...his character needs a total reboot.
  • Sting/Kevin Nash vs. Samoa Joe/Jeff Jarrett - Really, really weird ending to a sub par match. The only entertaining portions were the ones in which Joe was on the offensive. Sting can still work a little but it's clear that Kevin Nash is completely shot. Not sure why this match was on the pay-per-view as it wasn't any better than a typical Impact! match.
  • The Pope vs. Ken Anderson  - This match was sabotaged from the get go. Hardy and Angle stole any thunder that these two had with their marathon of a match. The pace was way too slow and it showed as the usually-hot-for-anything Impact Zone crowd was pretty quiet for the majority of the match. Even the near falls towards the end of the match failed to elicit anything more than courtesy reactions from the crowd. This match was really a disappointing way to end a less-than-stellar card so I suppose the choice to have this match go last was fitting.
The Ugly
  • Sting's Ring Gear - Wrestling with a t-shirt on should be illegal unless the match is a street fight (in which case jeans and cowboy boots would round out the outfit). He can't possibly be as saggy as Rick Flair so why cover up? I guess Bischoff would say that the look tests well with TNA's target demos.
  • My Ankle Hurts / Now It Doesn't - Angle did an absolute number on Jeff Hardy's ankle at the end of regulation and beginning of the first overtime but Jeff would go on to randomly and miraculously lose his limp at odd intervals. Learn 2 sell~!
Very, very disappointing pay-per-view tonight. Five of the eight matches simply were not PPV quality. TNA usually showcases quality in-ring action that is held back by questionable booking. That wasn't the case as tonight the wrestling simply wasn't any good for the most part. I really feel bad for the 6,000 or so people who shelled out cash for tonight's event.

Heard Angle broke his rib on the Hardy swanton bomb on the floor.

Yeah, Borash said he dislocated his rib. That spot was pretty early on in the match…I can’t imagine the amount of pain he was feeling. That dude is definitely a trooper.

They're really trying to incorporate

the MMA type finishes into their matches. I wonder what kind of stink this is going to cause.

Did they explain why Generation Suck took over for the Brits? I missed the first 20 minutes or so of the show.

Rule of thumb, if you have a main event that isn’t for the heavyweight title, ALWAYS put Kurt Angle in that match. Very disappointed with the Anderson/Pope match. One more thing, why have “5 more minutes” if you HAVE to have a winner? Doesn’t make sense, Eric, doesn’t make sense.

Nope. London Brawling couldn’t make it because of “personal problems.”

I thought that the first semifinal match was going to end in a draw so that the second match would end up being for the Heavyweight Title as a way of getting the belt on someone new. Guess not. They’ll probably have a five minute rematch on the live Impact in a few weeks.

Oh, where the hell is the Nash/Sting Jarrett/Hogan thing going? Apparently nowhere. So random that Joe was thrown in there. TNA booking strikes again!

This was probably Joe's punishment.

TNA has been teasing the same storyline for years now. The old guys don’t want to relinquish the top spots. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

And the bookers certainly don’t seem to want to show them the door. Could Dixie really be that naive?

Apparently she is.

Which is why she is one of the best money marks of all time. I really wonder how much input and influence she actually has at the end of the day.

Thanks for this.

That main event just reads depressing and I like the Pope a lot. Too bad they had to follow an awesome match.

Glad the Young Bucks/Generation Me are getting a little push. I’m sure TNA sees them as a Hardy Boyz for this new generation of wrestling fans. They certainly have the upside in my humble opinion.

Samoa F*ckin’ Joe. If there’s anybody who should be in this title tournament it’s him. How is it that the four semi-finalists were all ex-WWE’ers? I dunno. Husky Harris gives me hope that somehow the WWE will look past Joe’s girth and sign him for his talent. As of right now, TNA is wasting him.

Sting in a T-shirt? Blasphemy. Here’s another wrestler that should be respected and put in meaningful feuds like Shawn was involved in when he wasn’t going for a title. Nash and Jarrett are dead weight and have been irrelevant for the past 5 years. Okay, make that 10 years for Nash.

Thanks again, jlamb, for taking the time to watching this.
