According to SpywareWrestling.com, on this day in pro wrestling history the Monday Night Wars officially began. The week prior was the actual debut of Nitro but Raw was preempted so it ran unopposed. The first head to head matchup was won by Nitro when they came in with a 2.5 rating compared to the 2.2 scored by Raw. Raw was in a pretty big slump during this period so Nitro struck at just the right time. They stole Lex Luger right out from underneath McMahon's nose, even though he didn't much want him anyway, and used him to help legitimize the show. He main evented the night in a match with Hulk Hogan. Nitro wouldn't really take off and blow the WWE away for 83 straight weeks until the spring of 96' when Scott Hall and Kevin Nash showed up. You know what happened then. Hogan, the heat seeking missile that he is, pun intended, latched on to the hot new angle, turning himself heel and the nWo was the biggest thing in the wrestling world. Eventually, WCW would collapse under it's own incompetency but it was fun while it lasted. Above is a cool video highlight of the Monday Night Wars set to "Slither" by Velvet Revolver. (Note - I understand that today is a very sensitive day regarding the history of America. I hope I'm not offending anyone by posting this. I figured it would be nice to come here and remember something different in history on this day that made us feel good.)
