UFC 118: Edgar vs Penn 2 - Randy Couture vs James Toney Preview
This feels like way too much of a mismatch to me. Like it shouldn't even be sanctioned. Toney is one hell of a boxer by all accounts but that doesn't mean a thing in a fight against a wrestler. Training and fighting are two entirely different things. Once you get in trouble in a fight you revert back to what you know. When Toney is on his back what is he going to do? This is going to get ugly.

I’d agree with this post if Randy was in his prime but what’s going to happen when James hits Randy in the head with those 4 oz gloves? This is a stupid fight in that it is a dumb risk for Randy. He might get his head knocked of his shoulders. Stupid risk for no gain…

You really think that Couture will ever be in range of a Toney’s hands? He would be stupid to do so. He has said repeatedly that he has no plans on doing anything like that. He’s gonna double leg his ass and pound him out or submit him.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Honest question
When was the last time Randy pounded someone out or submitted someone James’s size?

Well, he submitted Mark Coleman at UFC 109 and he repeatedly took down and pounded out Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74. Coleman is roughly the same size as Toney and Gonzaga is plenty bigger.

We'll see...
Like I said, too much risk and absolutely no gain whatsoever for winning. Stupid fight for Randy to take. I’m not saying Randy is going to loose I’m saying the win ain’t worth the risk he is taking. Hope he doesn’t get hurt. Randy really hasn’t looked all that great in his last few fights.

I hear ya.
I think Dana might actually try to push him toward a title shot for taking a fight like this.

I hope Dana throws him some sort of bone after this fight. But isn’t this Randy’s last fight on his contract? I don’t know for sure but I was told that by a friend. I still think Randy is a bit like Chuck, a knockout away from being retired by Dana.

Before the Nogueria fight he signed a six fight deal. The Nog fight was the first fight on the deal. Then he fought Vera, then Coleman so he has 3 fights left on his contract, 2 after this fight.

I thought Vera and Coleman were both bones?
I was thinking the same thing you’re saying after he fought Brock. “Ok, give him a couple easy fights then send him on a reasonable path back to the title,” but they kind of blew up in his face.
I’m afraid age finally caught up with him. Which makes me a little sad, but it is/was inevitable.
