Chael Sonnen Earned a Flat Fee of $35,000 For His Promotional Work

Ufc-117-poster1-400x300_medium

The total fighter salaries have been released for the participants of UFC 117 and the first thing that pops out at me is how much base salary Chael Sonnen made for his fight with Anderson Silva. For everything he did to sell this PPV and for how many buys it ended up doing he should have been paid more. I don't want to hear about locker room bonuses either because those may or may not exist depending on who you ask. The salaries are as follows:

Anderson Silva: $200,000 (no win bonus)
def. Chael Sonnen: $35,000

Jon Fitch: $108,000 (includes $54,000 win bonus)
def. Thiago Alves: $60,000

Clay Guida: $56,000 ($28,000 win bonus)
def. Rafael dos Anjos: $12,000

Matt Hughes: $200,000 ($100,000 win bonus)
def. Ricardo Almeida: $35,000

Junior Dos Santos: $80,000 ($40,000 win bonus)
def. Roy Nelson: $15,000

Rick Story: $22,000 ($11,000 win bonus)
def. Dustin Hazelett: $18,000

Phil Davis: $18,000 ($9,000 win bonus)
def. Rodney Wallace: $6,000

Johny Hendricks: $40,000 ($20,000 win bonus)
def. Charlie Brenneman: $8000

Tim Boetsch: $32,000 ($16,000 win bonus)
def. Todd Brown: $6,000

Stefan Struve: $30,000 ($15,000 win bonus)
def. Christian Morecraft: $6,000

Dennis Hallman: $30,000 ($15,000 win bonus)
def. Ben Saunders: $12,000

wow

Matt Lindland wasn’t kidding when he said Chael was a company man. Shane Carwin would barely agree to do any interviews for $50,000.

It’s sad that Fitch, a guy who draws flies, is getting paid more.

Nate

Do you know if Chael is still operating under his original WEC contract of if he’s on a fresh UFC contract?

Sonnen should be heavily pissed about this. I think UFC fighters are grossly underpaid considering the PPV numbers and sold out arenas.

True Story

I bet the next contract he gets will be worth more but overall MMA fighters don’t make that much cash.

I know you said...
I don’t want to hear about locker room bonuses either because those may or may not exist depending on who you ask.

But you have to believe that this fight lined Sonnen’s pocket for more than $35,000.

I’d be surprised in White didn’t drive a dump truck full of money to Oregon and parked it in front of Sonnen’s house.

Also, if we don’t get Belfort/Sonnen for the Interim MW title, I riot.

I don't have to believe it.

It’s a big PR move on Dana White’s part to say that he “takes care of guys” with these phantom bonuses. It reinforces brand loyalty. It makes people feel good about the UFC. It’s bullshit. I’ll believe it when I know it to be true.

After all, if he is such a smart business man then why pay any more money then he absolutely has to?

Smart business men may do so...

If it helps make them more money in the future, through employee retention and/or motivation to perform. In UFC if no one gets special bonuses for great performance, we might see the overall performance being lower.

As you point out, there is goodwill potential in Dana’s statement that he gives out extra bonuses. That goodwill has value, which would evaporate if the fighters all tell us the extra bonuses don’t exist. So if Dana makes the statement, he “has to” do it to get the value of that statement.

Well put.

That’s the best point I’ve seen made regarding this issue.

Good interview...

Chael’s a good interviewee. Clearly his pattern is to insult his opponent before the fight and be respectful afterwards. It all plays into him being effective as a salesperson. For some reason when I watched it, it ended abruptly at 14.59 and doesn’t get to the point where he says UFC owes him nothing. I also can’t see where he answers whether he deserves an immediate rematch… Odd.

Props to Straka, solid interviewing skills. Enjoyed this a lot!
