UFC on Versus 2 - What To Watch For

If you are looking for a technical breakdown of all the fights for UFC on Versus 2, you will not find it here. For that, I will refer you toJeremiah Johnson's excellent breakdown of all the fights. What we have here is some early predictions and some of the other fun tidbits to look for before you sit down to enjoy some MMA goodness Sunday night.
Fight of the Night: Tyson Griffin vs. Takanori Gomi. Both lightweights are coming off of losses (Gomi lost to Florian and Griffin lost to Dunham) and need a win badly if they want to stay in the lightweight title picture. This will add some drama to a fight that could be a three round stand up war. Seriously, Gomi isn't nicknamed the "Fireball Kid" because he is a submission expert. The former Pride lightweight champ loves to throw power punches and by power punches I mean wild, fight ending haymakers. This shouldn't deter Griffin, who we have seen mix it up with some pretty heavy handed fighters before (Franca and Ludwig), from standing and banging with Gomi. Perfect equation for Fight of the Night.
Knockout of the Night: John Howard. Quite simply, I am picking Howard for Knockout of the Night based on his destruction of Daniel Roberts in his last fight. It you have not seen the carnage Howard caused to Roberts' head, I suggest clicking here to watch the video.
Submission of the Night: Jacob Volkmann. It would be silly not to pick a guy who wins by submission sixty percent of the time. It would be like picking against Brooklyn Decker in a hot chick contest.
Non-Combat related Story of the Night: "Big" John McCarthy's return to the UFC. In December 2007, the most famous ref in MMA hung up his whistle (I know, MMA refs don't have a whistle) to pursue another career in MMA. After working as a fight commentator for the now failed Affliction promotion, "Big" John decided to go back to his roots and officiate his first fight in eleven months at Strikeforce: Destruction. Since then, "Big" John has been refereeing in every MMA promotion except the UFC. Well, come Sunday, we are going to see "Big" John return to the Octagon when he refs his first fight for the Zuffa owned company in almost three years. Welcome back Mr. McCarthy.
More predictions and fun tidbits after the jump...
Fighter in danger of getting cut: Loser of James Irvin vs. Igor Pokrajac. Both fighters are riding a two fight losing streak heading into this Light Heavyweight showdown. It seems that three losses in a row is the magic number for getting cut in the UFC and we should see the trend continue with either James or Igor getting their walking papers come post-fight time.
Most interesting match-up in terms of style: Yushin Okami vs. Mark Munoz. Since starting his MMA career in 2007, Munoz has been a one man wrecking crew with 5 of his 8 wins coming via KO or TKO and he has been even more dangerous since dropping down from 205 to 185 (undefeated in 3 fights at 185). Munoz is going to be facing a fighter whose name you might not know, but his style is the new thing in MMA; lay and pray. It should be interesting to see if Munoz can use his all-American wrestling background to counter Okami's grappling ability and turn this fight into a striking match.
Hot prospect making their debut: Charles Oliveira. Never heard of Mr. Oliveira before? That is because this is only his second time fighting outside of Brazil and his first time fighting for the UFC. The newest UFC lightweight is going to be riding an impressive 12-0 record heading into his bout with Darren Elkins and is very well rounded (6 wins by knockout, 5 by submission and 1 via decision). We have seen prospects in the past wilt under the bright lights of the grand stage in their UFC debut so it should be fascinating to see if Oliveira rises to the challenge or falls under the pressure of making it to the big time.
Don't blink fight: Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko. So far in his young MMA career, Jon Jones has been nothing short of entertaining (and dominant). While he has the physical and technical skills to complete in the Light Heavyweight division for years to come, it is his in-cage creativity that has set him apart from his peers so far. We have already seen Jones connect with some crazy striking, inventive takedowns and facing breaking elbows, so it should be fascinating to see what new video game-like moves he comes up with Sunday night. Don't blink or you may miss a move from the young gun that will make your head explode (or Matyushenko's).
Do you think I am off with any of my picks? Let me know.

I think most fans would know Okami
Considering he’s the only top ten fighter on the card and he’s got more UFC fights than anyone else on the card. He’s hardly an unknown.
In that fight, Munoz won’t be looking to keep it standing with his wrestling, he’ll want to take Okami down at the first opportunity. Okami will likely look to keep it standing.

yeah I think
Munoz will be looking to get Okami to the ground, especially since Okami unleashed some impressive boxing in his last fight, check it out.

Okami did look great there.
If he can stay aggressive and keep Munoz under pressure I think he can throw him off his game enough to take a decision from him. Okami’s power is underrated and we could definitely see it here.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

I can't really disagree with you
It should be interesting to see how Okami deals with Munoz’s power
