Great Minds Think Alike: SBN's Jon Bois echoes some of Larry Miller's thoughts on why wrestling is awesome
Over on the main site of our fine network here at SBNation, weekend editor Jon Bois has chimed in with a column about the awesomeness of wrestling, similar to the one that by actor/comedian Larry Miller that we posted earlier in the week. In addition to plugging our live blog coverage of the show tonight (7 PM Easten sharp, folks! Don't ya dare miss it! Oh, and thanks Jon!), he offers up a pretty good outsider's look at wrestling, plus the hardcore fan's view from FanHouse's Brandon Stroud:
What do I love about wrestling? I love that it combines violence with theater performance. I love that it brings to life and amplifies the building blocks of human emotion in the most confusing way imaginable. There is beauty in simplicity, and even more beauty in complexity made simple. If you want me to be honest, I like bright colors and loud noises. It allows me to be smart and stupid at the same time. It is an exercise for the brain. It is memories of childhood carried into adult life. It is characters from the world of fiction who are living, constantly acting people you can meet and interact with, or even wrestle if you wanted. You can't read The Bluest Eye, then drive somewhere and meet Soaphead Church. But I have a picture of me shaking hands with Bruno Sammartino. I can't meet Ted Levine and expect him to act like Buffalo Bill. But I can meet Rey Mysterio, and he'll still be wearing his mask.
Wrestling is fun. It doesn't need to be real to be fun. It never has. Santa Claus is a hell of a lot of fun, too, if you don't have somebody standing beside the line at the mall nudging kids and going "hey, you know this ain't the REAL Santa Claus, right." And then that guy goes off to whatever the MMA equivalent of Santa Claus is. Strikeforce, maybe.
