April 17th update: UFC's live head to head special against Strikeforce's CBS show looks to be off

Dana White is shrewdly not sweating the limited TV drawing power of Dan Henderson.

After pondering taking a page from Vince McMahon's playbook (running a live TV special on the same night and the same city as the Strikeforce CBS show), it looks like Dana White has decided against it.  As Dave Meltzer reported yesterday, UFC did not file an event permit application with the state of Tennessee before the 30-day in advance deadline, meaning that UFC will not be able to run a live show against the Strikeforce CBS show in the same market.  Of course, this doesn't preclude UFC from running a live TV special on April 17th elsewhere, but the fact that nothing has been announced by now suggests that Dana at some point changed his mind.

This is probably a smart decision given that Zuffa is already terribly overstretched and risking overexposure at the moment.  If they had added a live TV special on April 17th, Zuffa would be running 6 major shows in just 35 days.  Also, Strikeforce's CBS line up looks really weak on paper, with ex UFC fighter Dan Henderson's debut for the promotion being the only match currently booked that would draw any interest from casual MMA fans.  I'm highly sceptical that that alone is enough for Strikeforce to draw a respectable prime time network rating.  So it makes sense for Dana White to take the night off and go for the cheaper and easier option of airing PPV matches that have never been seen on free TV before to counter Strikeforce's CBS special.
