WWE NXT results 3/2

William Regal, main eventer on this week's NXT.

Results from tonight's show:

  1. WWE Rookie Darren Young (w/ WWE Pro CM Punk, Serena, and Luke Gallows) defeated WWE Rookie David Otunga (w/ WWE Pro R-Truth) after a full nelson slam-type move that looked worse than Otunga's spinebuster-esque finisher last week.
  2. WWE Rookie Wade Barrett (w/ WWE Pro Chris Jericho) defeated WWE Rookie Daniel Bryan (no Miz) with an overhead slam out of a Samoan drop position on Bryan's "injured" ribs.
  3. WWE Pro Matt Hardy & WWE Rookie Justin Gabriel defeated WWE Pro William Regal & WWE Rookie Skip Sheffield after Gabriel hit a 450 splash on Sheffield.

This week's notes:

  • After getting squashed last week, Young took most of the match against Otunga and this match went significantly longer than 30 seconds.  It was not very good at all as both were really green.  Otunga looked like a star last week and looked like a huge green guy this week, while Young looked bad in losing last week, and looked bad winning this week because he just wasn't very good.  CM Punk interfered in the finish, and after having shown indifference towards Young previously, the announcers hinted that Punk might yet see something in Young.  There was also a backstage brawl after the match between R-Truth and Otunga, so add them to the list of mentor/rookie groups who are feuding (along with Bryan/Miz and Sheffield/Regal).
  • Miz did not appear in front of the live crowd, but did do a backstage segment where he sprung an unexpected match on Bryan while he was being treated for rib injuries.  Bryan got a decent amount of offense in, but "slipped" while attempting a springboard move and then was hit with Barrett's slam.  He didn't look bad in the loss at all, I didn't think.
  • The sit down interviews remain a big plus, this week they did interviews with Bryan and Sheffield.  They also did some sort of weight room training segment with Slater and Christian that established them as one of the few duos on NXT that actually sort-of get along.
  • They do seem to be more clearly establishing that only one person is going to win NXT, and that it will be determined by the pros.  Last week, it wasn't really clear what was going to happen with the rookies, but this week they made it clear that there will be a winner of some sort, and that the pros could neither vote for nor against their own rookie.  It's still not clear what that really means beyond "WWE will decide who they want to win."

Overall, I would say this week's show was a step down from last week's episode.  None of the matches were as good as the Bryan/Jericho match from last week, though the main event was good.  But the opener was really bad, and I'd expect that the stock of both rookies may have tumbled a bit in the eyes of the powers that be, because the match was that bad.  Then again, that's what the next few weeks are for, helping these green guys get ring time in front of real crowds against some good wrestlers (and Carlito) to help them make an impact when they are called up.
