ECW is dead, enter WWE NXT (Also Tommy Dreamer is annoying)
Vince McMahon announced tonight on ECW that the show will be dead in 3 weeks, to replaced by some big new concept, believed to be a show called WWE NXT (Next generation...but edgier!), as they've registered a trademark for it. No idea yet if the belt will be retired or renamed. On Twitter, Tommy Dreamer noted that this was part of why he left WWE, which means he may in fact be the biggest mark in the wrestling business since the original promotion has been dead for 9 years. I don't think he was pissed off when the Savoldis stopped using the ICW name, was he?

Dreamer is seriously passionate about the biz. I don’t blame him, I think it was stupid to bring back the ECW name without letting it be what it used to be. It sucks because the old ECW was special. I think they should’ve brought it back, kept it the way of Paul E. and put it on late Saturday nights. Forget the family friendly crap. ECW was never the same since the 2nd ONS PPV.

To be fair to Tommy Dreamer, what was WWE going to do with him after they scrapped ECW other than wish him well on his future endeavors? He wouldn’t fit in with the branding of the new show and if they saw him as a talent that was good enough to use on Raw and Smackdown, he wouldn’t have retired and taken the talent relations job in 2004. Tommy Dreamer wasn’t much of a mark for quitting a job he was going to lose soon anyway. If anything, he was a much bigger mark almost 4 years ago when he quit his office job to come back as a full time wrestler of an inevitably doomed reincarnation of the promotion he became a star in.
I absolutely agree that he was a bigger mark for quitting the cushy office job, but any connection to the original promotion other than the name was long gone, so he’s just whining about semantics.

Just how many ECW stars are currently in WWE? Lets see, RVD? Gone. Rhino? Gone. Sabu? Gone. Sandman? Gone. Dreamer was the last of the ECW crossovers. It was only a matter of time.
Jericho spent some time in the original ECW

Tommys seemingly bad judgement has helped him do better for himself than anybody would of ever guessed.
How is this NXT thing anything but a move sideways ratings wise?
If he didn’t return to the ring he’d probably have a cushy WWE office job right now with benefits.
As far as the ratings, there may be a move into sci-fi characters to appease the network at least.
