Never any time to waste. In we go.
Houston vs Philadelphia
My Prediction - Eagles 34-21
Game Outcome - Eagles 34-24
If you go back and read my prediction for how this game would play out, I pretty much nailed it on all accounts. I said Vick would have a good game and he did. I said to expect a McCoy sighting and he killed it, with 8 catches for 86 yards and a touchdown as a receiver and 44 yards and a touchdown as a runner. It's too easy with the Texans. They just don't play defense. How long until they fire Kubiak? I like him and all but this system doesn't work. I'll believe more in the Eagles if they get past the Cowboys on a national stage next Sunday night. That's the money game.
New Orleans vs Cincinnati
My Prediction - Saints 27-16
Game Outcome - Saints 34-30
The Bengals were shockingly efficient in this game; all the way up until the moment they weren't. Which just so happened to be the worst possible moment. The Saints played outstanding offensively but gave up way too many points to a struggling Cincinnati team that they should have blown out. That said, good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose. Speaking of that.
Chicago vs Detroit
My Prediction - Bears 23-10
Game Outcome - Bears 24-20
The Lions are a bad team that once again found a way to lose. I was so thoroughly unimpressed with the way my Bears were playing defense I was throwing my new hat around the living room. But the offense continues to run like a well-oiled machine and Jay Cutler continues to play shockingly good football. His composure as he rallied the Bears to win in the fourth quarter was something to behold and he'll need that down the stretch. The next four weeks will be the toughest of any team in the league: vs New England, @Minnesota, vs NY Jets and @Green Bay. Let's bring it home, Chicago.
San Francisco vs Green Bay
My Prediction - Packers 30-13
Game Outcome - Packers 34-16
No surprises here. The Packers have a really good offense and the 49ers have an extremely mediocre defense. They kept it close in the first half but eventually the better team ruled the day. Not a whole lot to it after that.
Jacksonville vs Tennessee
My Prediction - Titans 21-17
Game Outcome - Jaguars 17-6
It's actually looking like the Jaguars are going to win the AFC South and host a Wildcard game in January. That's partially because the division is so bad but also has a lot to do with the running game finally coming alive. Couldn't have picked a better time for Maurice Jones-Drew to go off and have 5 consecutive 100 yard games. Meanwhile, Chris Johnson is miserable for the Titans and they're just a completely broken team. Jeff Fisher, for as good of a coach as he is, should be fired come the end of the year. Time for another guy to get a shot.
Denver vs Kansas City
My Prediction - Chiefs 27-20
Game Outcome - Chiefs 10-6
Didn't expect the Broncos to play so well on defense and didn't expect both teams to struggle so much on offense but the end result is no surprise. Tamba Hali, anyone? Where did this kid come from? The play-calling was suspect from the Chiefs but I still believe in them after this uneven performance. Division games are tough, no matter who you're playing. Grinding one out shouldn't be looked at like a negative.
Cleveland vs Miami
My Prediction - Browns 20-19
Game Outcome - Browns 13-10
I said if the Browns were to win this game, it would be an extremely close one. That's exactly what it was. Dan Carpenter actually drilled a 60 yard field goal that ended up being the difference maker. That's when you know it's rough going. When your kicker has to make an absurdly long field goal for your team to win the game. By the way, Chad Henne? I don't understand how this guy can play so good one week and then look so college the next. As Chad Dukes would say, turn in your keycard.
Buffalo vs Minnesota
My Prediction - Vikings 20-14
Game Outcome - Vikings 38-14
No, the Vikings aren't back. No, Tavaris Jackson will not be the starting quarterback after the performance he put in, in this game. No, Brett Favre's streak will not end. No, the Vikings will not win out giving Leslie Frazier the head coaching job next year, if there is a next year. Yes, they beat a team that has no clue how to play defense. Yes, Adrian Peterson ran for 3 touchdowns on a bum ankle. Yes, they slaughtered the Bills at home. Yes, they held a normally good offense in check for almost the entirety of the game. Point is, don't look to far into this game. It's not a big indicator of either team.
Washington vs NY Giants
My Prediction - Redskins 23-20
Game Outcome - Giants 31-7
Ah, the Redskins. Truly a team that stopped giving a shit a couple of weeks ago after they were murdered on live television by the Eagles. They just don't have the heart anymore. Mike Shanahan was not the right guy for the job. He can't get his team to play, so he's not the right guy, period. That's all there is to it. To add insult to injury, they suspended Albert Haynesworth for the rest of the year. They might not win another game this season. This was simply target practice for the Giants and they took care of business the way a good team is supposed to.
Atlanta vs Tampa Bay
My Prediction - Falcons 24-16
Game Outcome - Falcons 28-24
I was seriously rooting for the Bucs in this game and they got jobbed towards the end on the interception that sealed the game. The ball hit the ground but the ref inexplicably awarded it to Atlanta. Not okay with the call but the Bucs didn't play good enough defense to deserve to win the game so my heart isn't exactly bleeding for them. They've got a ways to go but they'll be a contender next year. As for the Falcons, I'm not sure how I feel about them. They haven't overly impressed me all season. Looking forward to the rematch with the Saints.
Oakland vs San Diego
My Prediction - Chargers 30-10
Game Outcome - Raiders 28-13
Surprised after the fact by this game but I realized immediately that I shouldn't be. Really the same scenario as last time. Division game with a supposedly inferior team coming to town that no one expects to win and the Chargers were rolling and likely thought they would take this one down, no problem, and continue right on to winning the division in the final few weeks. Trouble is, the Raiders just killed them. They soundly outplayed them and there aren't any excuses for San Diego this time. Curious to see how they rebound next week from their first loss in December in like 4 years.
Carolina vs Seattle
My Prediction - Seahawks 24-13
Game Outcome - Seahawks 31-14
I said there was no chance the Panthers would win and they didn't. There wasn't anything to say about the game going in and there isn't anything to say about the game coming out. The Seahawks did what they were supposed to and disposed of a clearly wounded opponent. Moving along.
Dallas vs Indianapolis
My Prediction - Cowboys 21-20
Game Outcome - Cowboys 38-35
Funnest game I've watched in quite a while. In fact, the last game that was this fun was probably the Week 2 match-up between these Cowboys and my Bears. Since Jason Garrett took over, this Dallas team is playing phenomenal. Also, is Jon Kitna better for that offense than Tony Romo or is JG just game planning so well that it looks that way? I suspect the latter to be true especially with the new found emphasis on the running game. Which, by the way, should, from here on out, consist of Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Get Marion Barber out of there. His style doesn't work for the offensive the Cowboys have. The sooner they learn this the better off they will be. That said, they will be a tough out for any team not playing great on offense. Which was the Colts. They put up a ton of points, sure, but Manning is just giving the ball away at a clip that is shocking to even Jay Cutler. If he doesn't fix it fast, the Colts won't be playing in the postseason this year and that will be truly the weirdest thing about this already extremely goofy season.
Pittsburgh vs Baltimore
My Prediction - Ravens 23-21
Game Outcome - Steelers 13-10
Games like this, with two really strong defenses, usually come down to whoever makes the big mistake. In this game, it was the fateful Joe Flacco three step drop and throw that resulted in Troy Polamalu blowing him up and forcing a fumble that Lamar Woodley took back to the Ravens 10 yard line. Of course, Pittsburgh scored and that was the difference. Had it not been a three step drop, Flacco never would have fumbled because he wouldn't have been attempting to throw the ball at the precise moment Polamalu blasted him. Tough loss for Baltimore too, as they were largely dominating the game. I'd love to see a rubber match in the playoffs.
NY Jets vs New England
My Prediction - Patriots 20-17
Game Outcome - Patriots 45-3
Two things coming out of this game for me: 1. I feel great about the Bears chances to beat the Jets in a few weeks in Chicago. 2. I'm scared shitless of the Patriots, who are coming to Chicago this week. I thought the Patriots were the better team coming into this game but holy shit, this was a beating. The Jets at no point at all were in this contest. They never had a shot. And once it came out that Bill Belicheck had told his guys that they were playing a full 60, no matter what the score was, you knew exactly why the Patriots won the way they did. They were ready for this game on this kind of a stage and the Jets weren't. Mark Sanchez looked exactly like the young man that he is. They've still got room to operate and the season isn't over for them but it sure feels like all those close wins were more fluke than fancy. Have to wonder how they will bounce back from this. As for New England, I hope they shot their wad here and come into Soldier Field, Tom Brady's first time playing in that stadium, with their guard down and suffer a letdown game. Sadly, I'm sure that's not going to be the case. They just put the definitive statement out that they are the best team in the NFL. Hands down.
