UFC Heavyweight Contender Junior dos Santos Frustrated with Champion Cain Velasquez's Recent Injury

Photo

Fighters Only has the translation:

"I'm really outraged. How does a person leaves a fight versus Brock Lesnar in perfect physical condition and then get hurt without being in training? The last news I heard about Velasquez, he was riding in Mexico. How did he get injured?" he questioned.

"I'm in the best moment of my career, training heavily and working hard to put on the fight of my life, and all of a sudden, this is postponed for eight months. That's unfair.

"I'm five months without fighting, fighting is my life, not just because I love doing it, but also because I need to fight for a living. I don't make as much money as the top fighters, so I really need to work" said Cigano who expects Dana White to put him to dispute an interim belt.

Now this is what I like to see out of fighters.  There's a time and place for "I'll fight whoever the UFC gives me," or "It's up to Joe Silva and Dana White," but this is not it.  Junior Dos Santos is on fire, coming of a dominating performance over The Ultimate Fighter winner, Roy Nelson.  He's taking an aggressive stance on the situation, and asking for an interim belt, not looking to brown nose and cross his fingers.  Although I'm getting sick of how often we see interim titles, I'd be okay with it in this situation.  If JDS is a building a fan base, wants to fight, and the UFC needs to push him.  What better way to generate some hype for Cain Velasquez's first title defense than putting him in the cage and letting him challenge for an interim belt.

The question there is...who would be the opponent.  There's a certain large, currently bearded country boy that doesn't like being hit hard that could use a big payday fight...but would he take this fight?  Surely Dana White would love to push a Brock Lesnar vs. Junior dos Santos headlined event, insuring that he's still going to get his money's worth out of Lesnar.  I'm not so sure Lesnar would like his first fight back to be against someone like JDS though, and I can't blame him, the man needs some experience, and a few full training camps...jumping right back to the top of the division would be awfully rough for him.

Who would you like to see Junior dos Santos fight for an interim title?

Good read.

I would say Brock.

He’s the former champ and I think #4 in the ranks behind Dos Santos and Cain (in terms of fighters in the UFC).

I don’t think Brock would want this fight. Not because he can’t beat Dos Santos, but because if he does beat JDS, he has to get right back in the cage with Velasquez.

Yeah really, it’s a two edged sword. Even if he can get JDS to the mat and work his game, he gets Velasquez again. Brock’s situation is really unique…he is the most inexperienced fighter to ever grace the cage in modern UFC times…I WANT to see him brought along, given fighters he can work against, to get experience…but the dude isn’t getting paid for that. We’ll see what happens, but I am leaning towards Brock staying away from this match.

If Brock could just

work on his stand-up. Boxing or Muay Thai. Could you imagine his Thai Plum? He could kill somebody!!!!

So long as he stops doing the running Brock Lesnar knee/kick thing he does…he had good form against Couture, he needs to get back to that, and build there.

Brock Lesnar seems like the logical choice, though he shouldn't step foot in the cage with JDS.

I was thinking Shane Carwin, but he’s still out with the back injury. Frank Mir? Nah. Lesnar seems to be it.

With Lesnar off in the woods, Velasquez injured and Carwin recovering

The UFC HW division is in a mess again. As strong as it has gotten it is still the weakest and most problematic.

JDS has no one he can fight other than Lesnar for an interim title. I mean, what are they going to do have him rematch Stephan Struve? C’mon. He’s beat Cro Cop, Gonzaga, Nelson, Werdum, Yvel, Struve. If he fights anyone other than Lesnar for a interim title it’s a joke. If he fights anyone non-title and waits for Velasquez to come back, it’s also a joke.

It’s just a shame Overeem still has Strikeforce fights left on his contract because it’d be worth UFC’s while to drop a ton of cash on him.
