UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez out 6-8 Months with a Shoulder Injury

Bad news from MMA Fighting's Mike Chiappetta:
Newly crowned champ Cain Velasquez will be out of action for six to eight months with an injured shoulder, sources with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting. UFC president Dana White subsequently confirmed the news to MMA Fighting following Wednesday's UFC 125 press conference at the MGM Grand Hotel.
Bad news for Junior dos Santos, who is set to challenge Velasquez for the title in 2011. Some have been speculating that Frank Mir's recent fight change and lack of an announced fight may have to do with Brock Lesnar, but with so much up in the air for the UFC's heavyweight division now, it's hard to say what is what now. Hopefully Velasquez recovers quickly, and we can see him in the octagon once again ASAP.

I’m guessing Dana would like to book Brock vs. dos Santos for an interim heavyweight title match for UFC 129 if Brock isn’t one of the coaches for the next series of The Ultimate Fighter. Of course, that would be a difficult match for him to book. Velasquez being on ice until late summer/autumn certainly helps Lesnar’s leverage at a crux moment.

If [Velasquez] can stay away and not end up underneath Brock early, not take any serious damage there, the longer it goes the better it is for Cain. He's one of those guys at that weight class who has an unlimited gas tank. He's not going to get tired. Brock is a huge athlete. Every time he's out there we see something else. In the [Shane] Carwin fight he took a beating and still came back and found a way to win. I think that was important for him. Hopefully he got a bunch of big guys to come in so he could practice being in that worst-case scenario, which is having a guy like Brock sitting on you and hitting you in the head and ramming you into the fence," Couture said. "Those are the things that a guy that size can really do to you. I think if [Velasquez has] prepared himself for that worst-case scenario, and has prepared himself to survive there, he'll be able to do that in the fight."
