A very trustworthy source with knowledge of the issue told me last week that right now the commissions are largely hands-off on the issue and that no major studies are underway.
Zach Arnold on what the athletic commissions are doing in response to the recent research into CTE and brain trauma in contact sports. If true, then that's disappointing, though not all that surprising when it seems that in Nevada they are even taking a lax attitude to boxers falsifying MRI tests.

That sucks
Unfortunately MMA is in a shitty spot. It can’t claim comparable evidence to boxing in relation to the trauma its athletes endure, and so it’ll likely always remain a backburner matter until something truly terrible happens on MMA’s biggest stage.
In short -- it won't be noticeable until the worst possible thing happens in the worst possible place for it to happen
Lemme guess, in-ring UFC death?
Looking at how big the brouhaha was over at BE when Ivan Trembow called it quits on combative sports fandom, especially once it became obvious that the problem tends to extend to contact sports in general…
Sadly I think you’re probably going to be true. That or another Benoit/Levens murder suicide by a contracted UFC fighter. :-(

It might have to be a UFC legend, current champion or "notable" former champion
It’s kinda like the difference between a OVW (back in the day) or FCW guy, and a former WCW/WWE World Heavyweight Champion and continual main-eventer.
In retrospect, the murder-suicide incident is more likely if only because the UFC probably goes out of the way to keep its in-ring neat and tidy — or at least, it’s far more controllable (with help from the athletic commissions) than fighters’ outside lives.
