In a recent interview with GracieMag, Velasquez, who will take on UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 October 23 in Anaheim, Calif. says that his "tryout" for the UFC wasn't much more than an impromptu training session in Vegas set up by his manager, Bob Cook, who called Dana White and asked him to check out his star pupil. According to Cain Velasqez, the UFC president was so impressed with what he saw, he signed him without watching a single one of his fights. "I had two fights on my CV and wanted to fight in other shows before going to the UFC to get some experience. But It was really hard to get fights with other organizations, so my manager said: ‘We haven’t fought in a long time, we can’t wait any longer. It’s time to call up the UFC.’ He made the call, made Dana White an offer and we went to Vegas," Velasquez recalls. "We took two fighters with us and Dana watched me standing with those two fighters and doing Jiu-Jitsu with another two heavyweight athletes. He liked what he saw and told me I was in the UFC." Cagewriter posted this picture at the UFC 118 weigh-ins. Yes, that's his ass crack hanging out for all to see. That must have been what Chandella and Arianny were laughing at while he was on the scale. Combined with reports that he'll be making between $750,000 and $1 million for this fight, I'm ashamed for MMA today. This fight means nothing, is pretty much already decided, Toney is robbing the bank here and he's been on my TV way too often. I've been more or less obligated to talk about him but I'll be extremely happy when all is said and done on Saturday night.

Ultra popular WEC fighter Urijah Faber told Sherdog.com that he will be back in action sometime in November. "I was doing some kickboxing and takedowns and my leg got yanked from the outside in ... They said it was an atypical injury to my MCL. My MCL kind of peeled away from the bone. They told me I wouldn't need surgery, but I'd be out four to six weeks. I was able to do some stuff without twisting it, so I was able to work out, do physical therapy and stay in shape. It's been six weeks since I hurt my leg, this was supposed to be a six-week injury and I had my first full week of practice last week." What kind of fight is the California Kid looking for? "Where I'm at right now, I'm just having a great time and fighting my heart out ... I just want fights that make sense. (A fight with Miguel) Torres would be bigger for me right now than (fighting WEC bantamweight champion Dominick) Cruz. There are all kinds of fights I can do right now and can go back up to 145. I feel like I can do well against most anybody at 145 and I'd be willing to go to 155 at some point." I guess the move down in weight to 135 may not be something that Faber wants to do. The possibility of moving to 155 intrigues me as that may be his way of getting into the UFC -- and the bigger pay days a fighter with his type of name recognition could command. HT:Sherdog.com
